    Roadbed ?

Same here! My shortline (based on a trolley line in West virginia) doesn't use raised roadbed. I lay my track on the homosote then use cinders, grass, weeds and real dirt I've screened and run over a magnet to get out any metal as what little ballast there is. Looks just what it is, an almost...

    Your Favorite HO Scale Manufacturer?

Gee, I don't have any. My cousin had some Marklin years ago. It was an 0-6-0 tank engine of German prototype. I remember it had awful deep flanges and when I started to handlay code 70 it wouldn't run on the stuff. Other than that it was a good runner. Since I model mostly in the late '50's I...

    Your Favorite HO Scale Manufacturer?

I voted Kato and Atlas for a couple of reasons. First the ease to install DCC, a NCE DA-SR or KRS-SR fits just about everything I'm running right now. They run great right out of the box. And as they break in they get better. They are quiet, very quiet!!!! Since I detail 'em for my Proto...

    couplers and wheel Q's

I use Kadee's #58 coupler in everything but tank cars. There I'm converting to Kadee's new #118 shelf coupler. As far as wheelsets, every car has metal wheels. I won't even think about plastic. I'm starting to convert all the wheels to semi-scale 88 wheel treads. John D.

    Dependable Locomotive

Since I run mostly Alco's... RS1's, 2's 3's and 11's and a few GP7's, GP35's and GP38's all of my locos are either Atlas or Katos. I don't own any Blue Box Athearns.. And won't. Too me you just can't beat Atlas or Kato!.

What decoders to buy and ease of installation?

There is almost as many different decoders out there as locomotives. I use NCE decoders in a lot of installations. Thet feature quiet running and are available as plug and play or hard wire. NCE has specific decoders to fit the Atlas S1, 2,3 and 4. Also have one to fit into the PK2 SW series...

Which turnouts to use for Scenic and Relaxed?

Ahhhh yes, we would all love a bigger room, but availabilty is not always there. Some of us are stuck with what we have. I have a around the walls shelf type switching railroad. I use GP38's (Atlas) and up to 65' cars. I have a lot of #4's as sometimes thats what fits. Most of the...

Which turnouts to use for Scenic and Relaxed?

Also main line or yard. I'd stick to #6's on the main if I had the room for them. #4's are ok in the yard..

What were the engine types in the 40's, 50's and Early 60's?

The B&O ran Pacific's right up to the end of steam. Trains #72 and #73 that ran the Ohio River Sub came off in 1957. They were steam powered till the end. The last B&O steam operated was a 2-8-2 Q-4B, operated in May 1958.:thumb:  John D.

Invest in a good sprue cutter. Available in a well stocked hobby shop or at Micro-Mark. www.micromark.com They're invaluable!:thumb: John D. I agree about the detail on these Intermountain kits; great! Is there a surefire way to remove the small plastic details from the sprue? I've always...

    Intermountain HO Kit question

Like the man said, there are lots of maufacturers and many different types. A visit to your local HS should help you out. I never use the plastic grabs or stirrup steps. Always use metal/wire grabs and delrin stirrups. The plastic just doesn't make it.:curse: Wish you luck on the kit,:wave...

Push Me Over the Top !

I've never gone that route, but I would say you would need some kind of stop section to do what you want. In DCC the track voltage (AC) is constant. The receiver (decoder) inside the locomotive receives a signal from the power station and changes it to move, change direction, turn lights on/off...
