How do you clean your track?

I hadn't run my trains for 6 months due to a variety of reasons. When I started up again, I took a straight pin, dipped it in some Wahl Clipper Oil, and place a drop on each rail. Then I ran a train with a few cars around the layout. Everything works fine, including my recently purchased P2K...

    What's your problem?!

Rural scenery. I can do city scenery fairly well but for some reason I just can't get the knack of doing open spaces. Tom

    No more track cleaning....ALMOST

I would credit both the No-Ox and the fact that your run a lot of trains. Running trains is IMHO, the best way to keep your track clean. My layout is dormant from April to late November -early December. Soon I will be heading to the basement to run trains again. I just give the stubborn...

A Problem That is Becoming Magnified

My best vision (at age 62) is about three feet away. Unfortunately, my arms are about two feet long. I looked into having longer arms installed but the cost was prohibitive, not to mention the difficulty in finding clothes that fit and a whole host of additional problems having the longer arms...

    Weekly Photo Fun 10-3

Some really nice work so far this week and some great proto photos. As long as we're all having fun with our F units, here's mine. First up is my P1K UP version. Followed closely by a Santa Fe version of the same model. Going a little farther afield, here's my P2K E8. For the grand...

    Weekly Photo Fun 10-3

Well done, Les! It's good to see some operations in a video rather than a run-by. I enjoy switching much more than just watching a train run. Thanks for posting. Tom

    A piece of history

Last Sunday my wife and I decided to go train chasing. First stop was just east of Webster City, IA where we found this freight holding. While we were taking pictures it received clearance and started to move. Moving on to Iowa Falls, IA we found this bridge. The track...

    Weekly Photo Fun 9-12

Not only do I have no objection, I would actively encourage you to please post more. These are scenes few of us will ever have the opportunity to see. To have someone with a front row seat show us what is happening is truly a gift. Thank you, Herc Driver. Tom

    Sunset in Houston

All is well. I talked to him about an hour ago. He is without power and lost a few shingles off the house. He lives on the NW side of Houston so was spared some of the worst damage. Thank you for your concerns. It means a lot to me Tom

    Sunset in Houston

I just received this photo from my son. It was taken in his back yard in Cypress (a suburb of Houston). All who are in the track of this storm, stay safe. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Tom

How do you make the Flageways in Crossings?

Well done, Josh! Take some time to admire your handiwork. Tick. Tick. Tick. OK. That's enough. Now back to work! Tom

How do you make the Flageways in Crossings?

Josh, I used plaster of paris and added some gray (grey?) craft paint in the mix. Makes it easy. If you get the right color, you don't need to paint the roads. IIRC, WS plasster is Hydrocal which would work very well for making roads. Good luck and keep us posted (with pics, of course). tom

How do you make the Flageways in Crossings?

I pour the plaster in two layers. The first layer settles around the ties. Then the second layer is poured even with the rail tops. I use a phony plastic credit card (I get them in the mail all the time) to smooth out the surface. Then I use a hacksaw blade to cut the flangeway. I also...

    Weekly Photo Fun 8/29

The late afternoon sun lights up the cab on the switching crew as they finish their work. Back story: I haven't been in the train room for over a month. I was coming from the laundry room and happened to glance in the train room and saw this. The sunlight very seldom gets into the train...
