    Scratch Built Plans

Try this link out to find out more about one of my favorite books: http://www.pitbossannie.com/iss-tf-0890245142.html The book is called Easy-To-Build Model Railroad Structures. It dates from the time of strathmore board as a building material (which is still the norm here) and is full of...

    Question about Airbrushing

Russ, you use acetone to thin enamels like Testors Model Master? I didn't know that could be done. I've been using their thinner for years and right now I'm wondering how much I'd have saved by using fingernail polish remover...

    Intermountain HO Kit question

When I was building P2K Mather stock car kits for my Grandpa, the instructions suggested heating a hobby knife blade over a flame and using the hot razor to remove the part from the sprue, leaving a bit of the molding gate attached to the part to trim later. I found this method to be very...

    Intermountain HO Kit question

If you've only built three, then you haven't gotten into a rhythm yet! They are a bit time consuming, but like a Cannon cab kit, everything goes together easily. You can use thick CA to apply the grabs if MEK isn't giving you any success. I generally put them in place with MEK, let them dry...

    Handrail Spacing in HO?

I used to use a 0.030" shim that I cut to fit the hood ends of EMD locomotives. I've gotten pretty used to the distance I expect to see, so anymore I just position grabs until they look right.

hey everyone, i have a dilema.....

Guess what this used to be... Southeast of downtown Fort Worth, Texas. Granted, this is last year, so it wouldn't be appropriate for a late transition era layout necessarily, but it might give you an idea of how it might look to have a portion of a torn down roundhouse on your layout.

hey everyone, i have a dilema.....

You could always make the roundhouse in a state of demolition and fill the turntable pit, laying more tracks over it that feed a diesel service area, caboose track, etc. That way you don't need all the space required by the roundhouse, maybe only one or two stalls.

hey guys, need some help please!!

That should be enough to do one locomotive, so four steps I presume.

hey guys, need some help please!!

Try this site: http://www.ppw-aline.com/detlloco.htm Scroll down and look for the etched steps for the Front Range GP7. They should be a close-enough fit.

    dull cote queston?

Not a bad idea. I've done it with one of mine, but it's not easily reversible. If I were to do it over again, I'd just do the windows with a powdered chalk/alcohol wash. Your preferences and results may vary...:D

    dull cote queston?

Use Scotch "Magic Tape." That's what I've used for years and it works great. It has a matte finish but when you press it onto the model very well it appears clear so it's easy to tell if you have a good seal.

    N&W GP30 High Hood queston!

Haven't done a P2K shell yet, but everyone says 91% isopropyl alcohol. I've used it on Athearn Genesis units with great success in the past, so that's what I'll be trying on the next P2K geep I pick up if it's not already undecorated.

    N&W GP30 High Hood queston!

If you ever need any help on NS, N&W or Southern models, let me know. If I can't answer your question, I can get it to those who can. Truth be told, I've always wanted to do one of those GP30 high hoods, but it's so far behind all the others I want to do I won't get to it for years. But I...

    N&W GP30 High Hood queston!

Here's what you need: http://www.sourwy.railfan.net/macks.htm It's not illustrated, but this article covers what you're trying to do. Not as straightforward as other high hood conversions, but it could be worse... Oh, and check out Andy Harman's site, too: http://www.gp30.com/models/...

    GP60 question.....

RPP did a SD7/9 kit, but never did a GP7. Proto's geeps are the standard around my house anyway. IIRC, the RPP SD7/9 kit had the ability to position the two tanks any way you want so that you could build an accurate CB&Q SD9 with the single tank. Pretty neat, considering it's a real pain to...

    GP60 question.....

Agreed with that, Russ. Athearn has already announced the GP35, shown Harry Wong's photo at the Seattle Train Show: http://www.pbase.com/tracktime/image/31467678. I would like to see the SD40/38/45 come next, since all use a common frame. Maybe even an updated SD7/9. Athearn's...

    GP60 question.....

Well, tell him I said thanks for the work he did with RPP, 2slim! I got many miles out of my RPP locomotives. They might be a bit crude by today's standards, but they remain the sole source of a few unusual prototypes. I still have a few models built from those shells and even one Athearn...

hey everyone, can i get some information please?

I agree with Clark. Gavin's article on backdrops here on The Gauge is the best work I've seen yet. I look forward to painting backdrops now that I've seen this article.
