    June-July Track Planning Contest

With many thanks to: Ralph, Will, Catt, David, Cid, Andrew, Rick, & Clark for their help and ideas for my Mountain Home layout. Therefore, I humbly submit my current plan for the new house. Now, as far as the contest goes I believe that everyone listed above should get credit should (we)...

    Still plugging away at it….

Got it. Thanks for the visual. I’m not quite sure I have the room there for the turntable and building (of some kind). I do think that I can place it on the opposite side or remove the hill just south west of Marysville, which would place it in front of the Refinery. Still, I’m not sure...

    Still plugging away at it….

Hi Clark, That just might work out for my situation. Thanks a bunch. Andrew, Were you thinking of placing the roundhouse in the open section just east and a little south of the Marysville? Or were you thinking of replacing the single industry directly east near edge of the lift out...

    Still plugging away at it….

Hi Cid & Clark, Found it. I totally missed the turntable located in the track library. I was looking for it in all the structure libraries. I also see what you mean by the round house not fitting the turntable. I don’t think that will be a big thing if I leave some extra room around the...

    Still plugging away at it….

Okay, I go again. I have made some significant changes. They are as follows: 1. Added a bypass track so trains do not have to enter the town and industrial district. 2. Added a run around in the industrial district. 3. Added three short staging tracks for cars behind the town just...

    Still plugging away at it….

Hi Andrew, Thanks for the comments. Plan scale is for HO and is 23’ X 23’. The real boss let me have the entire garage. Lower and east ends of the layout are 2.5’ deep. Where the staging yards are is now 3’ deep. I already know about the access and have a step stool to use should I have...

    Still plugging away at it….

This is now revision 528 to the layout. I have split up the staging yards so that one may back a train to the other and re-use it without having to use your hands. Idea came from one of the articles that I liked. I have spaced out some passing sidings, which should add to running more than...

    Back to square one.

Hi Sal, Here are some shots of plans that I have gathered over the years. Maybe you could adapt one of them to what you like.

    Trying again and still lost

Okay Guys, Made some changes. Take a look and let me know if I'm on the right track. If so I'll continue to make mods and maybe place the Intermodel Yard in the northern section since it's now available. I'm not sure I was able to do it correctly but on the left hand side there is now a...

    Back to square one.

Sal, That's what I did. Started in a three car garage on the single side. Wife liked what I was doing and gave me the 2 car side for my current layout. With the new house just purchased, she's going to let me have the entire garage but she wants the appartment upsairs as a guest house/room...

Woodie Yeah, I guess I love long mainline runs so being a twice around gives me a little over 2 scale miles of track. (Very nice thanks to Cid). I’m currently thinking that I would like to have a dedicated switcher located within the industrial district and be able to run two trains along...

    Trying again and still lost

Woodie, RE: Operation: I was planning (not sure it’s the correct way of doing it), on leaving one track say eastbound staging empty. Then running westbound train all the way around and then using the double slip between the yards have it go westbound on the inside loop to return to the...

    Trying again and still lost

Rick, David and Everyone Else: Okay, here’s a thought. Now understand this was one of those 2am thoughts that one wakes up with. Regarding a shorter than train length reversing section. I understand that using (which I do), metal wheels may create a short. What about cutting in a larger...

Woodie, Yes, I believe you have confuddled me. (trying real hard to understand), Currently if I leave from the westbound yard and enter the Intermodel Yard using the run around track and then back in the cars I will be able to re-enter the westbound yard engine first. I would then be able...

    Trying again and still lost

Hi Woodie, I like the idea of a “Transit” loop. Don’t know what it is though. I think I have the ability to widen the lift-out section by a few inches so adding a third track should not be a problem. I just don’t understand what this transit loop is or how one would work. If it’s a...

Thought that might work. Okay here is what I have so far. Not sure it’s a good design but I’ll let everyone tear it apart. Removed the Refinery, Re-did the Intermodel yard with a runaround track, Added a bypass so one would not have to enter the town or District. I kept they staging...

Another question if I may. One of many more to come. Would a run around track work for allowing the opposite direction traffic to use the intermodel yard? In my mind this would work (I think). Jim

    Trying again and still lost

Thanks for the input Cid, I’m thinking about leaving the reversing loop in the Industrial District in place and allow the switcher there to be able to use it. Not for mainline use. I never thought about the eastbound traffic not being able to use the Intermodal Yard. I might move that up...

This new layout will be using DCC by Lenz. Should I have a dedicated programming track or can I take a line from the staging tracks, insulate both rails and have a track in that location? Not sure how most people do this. Jim

Good thought David. Thanks for the info. I never thought that the metal wheels would create the short. Okay, I need to remove the very short reversing section. I might just have to do without unless I can figure another location for a longer one. Jim
