    Something to smile at

This is a (bad) copy of the hand drawn and framed cartoon that was presented to my old Pop on the day of his retirement in 1960, after 40 years service as a Railwayman. It was 'presented' to him by a group of Firemen that had 'served' under him. Hope it raises a smile :)

    Painting rails and ties

I just read an older thread regarding this issue and it appears that many do this. Is this the norm? Does it add such a depth of realism that the time spent is well worth it? (And I know what you will say already Woodie ;) :D ) And if so, paint before or after laying track - which is better?

    Kit Assembly

Once again, probably a question asked many times.. Because there are no ready manufactured rolling stock or coaches for New Zealand railways, I have to create everything from kits. My questions are, which are the recommended glue types for both cast metal and resin. My previous experiences...

    geared locos (& others)

I KNOW that these have been probably been discussed many times on here, but I am doing research (still) and am probably being lazy. I'm kinda hoping enough people will give me answers so I won't have to look too hard :D I am looking at creating a couple of different layoputs, one being a...

OK. I understand the differences, but the question really relates to the fact that I am dreading the wiring part of my layout (when it happens) anyway. Is it that much more difficult to wire in DCC? And do the benefits of DCC outweigh it all? Is DCC the way a newbie should proceed or should I...

Greetings again all Does anyone know of/heard of a Brazilian company called Frateschi or of their US distributors Rail Road Models? I cannot get either of their websites up and so far no response to e-mails. They (Frateschi) are manufacturers of locos for New Zealand, Australia and South...

    Tracks - glue or pin?????

New question... I understand the benefits of pinning track directly to baseboard, but what about where the track is elevated? Isn't it easier to glue the track directly in situatiosn where the track is raised and not necessarily attached to an easily 'pinable' surface? I know this question...

    a question from a newbie

Hey all - have seen a couple of guys discussing layout materials and would be interested to know why the negativity surrounding the use of styrofoam. I realise that ply etc provides more substance, but isn't easier to use foam? Or is it only suitable for certain applications? cheers - Bruce O'Brien

A general comment from another newbie

Am about to start on the new "life" and as a complete ignorant just wanted to say "Thank God" for the Gauge and all the wonderful detail that there is to be had in here. From just reading many of the postings I am learning SO much, but would warn you all that there will no doubt be many very...
