    Inadequate obituary in MR

My October MR has arrived. I believe the VERY brief obituary for the late, great John Armstrong, is totally inadequate for a man of his stature in our hobby. Were Al Kalmbach and Linn Westcott around, this insult to a prolific MR author, and true legend would not have been permitted. MR...

    Canadian Association of Railway Modellers?

See page 10-11 of February 2004 Model Railroader. Anyone know more about C.A.R.M.? Is this partly a logical and expected result of what essentially amounted to the virtual cancellation of the 2003 Toronto NMRA convention, due to what many felt was an overreaction to S.A.R.S. ? Just...

    Wood truss bridges in 0 & G

These are red cedar truss bridges, the smaller in Lionel-0, and the larger in 1/24" for G gauge, ( with clearance for 1:20.3 equipment). The decks are the same as I use on my trestle kits. The G unit deck has 10 routed drainage slots through the deck ( not seen in photo ). The bridges are...

    Coal towers 'under construction'

These are two coal towers I have underway, one in 1/2" scale for G gauge [all red cedar], and one for Lionel-O [maple & birch]. They are loosely based , and scaled up from various elements of, the old "Bachmann-Plasticville" H0 units from the late 50's. regards \ Mike

    A lot of other "NARA's"

I was flipping throughan old 1988 RMC and found a reference to ICC information administered by "NARA". This is the US National Archives and Records Administration. So I did a Google hit for NARA to see what showed up, and there were 160,000 links, including, just on the first page, The...

    New Suspension Bridge Diorama

Even though not a strictly 'railroad' bridge, I thought the 'bridge fans' might like to see this one. It's a diorama I just finished, featuring a pedestrian suspension bridge, currently being built at Scenic Caves, near Collingwood. This model will be going into a display at a tourism...

    Wasaga Beach Ontario, MRR Auction

The Nottawasaga club are having their 9th annual model RR auction on May 3, 2003. I have been to several of these, and they are usually pretty good. Not as big as Harriston, but a lot of good items usually on hand. The auction is at the Oakview Centre on Mosely street, in Wasaga Beach..It's...

    Experimenting in large scale

This is a "building under construction" in F scale, also suitable for 1:24 or 1:22.5. It's to be an elevated structure, or something for a wharfside. I'm not modelling in large scale, just experimenting with methods & materials. It's board-by-board construction, all yellow cedar, ( except for...

    TERRIBLE British Rail Service

Has anyone else had the recent misfortune to try to get to a location in Britain, by rail, that is "off the beaten business path"? It's got to be the worst rail service in Europe now. My mother lives in Paignton, Devon, in an area where the sea wall is disintegrating from lack of funds to...

    Forgive a play on words...!

I can't resist this...there was a pretty good thread Val started a while ago, on "How does a Wye work?" Well, I was going through some detailed truss bridge drawings yesterday, and a strange thought struck me.... " Wye does a Howe work ?" No offense to anyone, especially those whose time...

    jon-monon's new logo/avatar

Although the new P-K Viking ship is impressive, I for one, really miss the Jack Nicholson picture....does anyone agree ? Hey Jon, if you tire of the Viking ship, perhaps one of the new "About Schmidt " likenesses of Jack would be your next logo???...the kinder, gentler Jack ??? best regards...

    R-T-R is one thing, but..???

R-T-R is one thing, but can anyone figure the megabucks Rivarossi is spending on advertising [Dec MR]: -full color ads for "trainset quality" cars with talgo trucks & horn hook couplers. -full color ads for plastic steam locomotives with either horn hook couplers or European hook-and-eye...

    Trestle construction

There have been many, many articles in the model press, over many decades, on how to build wood trestles. Every one has been correct in simulating most of the prototype features of such construction. Modelers who wish to try a wood trestle should consult these articles, not just website photos...
