    And Today (3/20) Is ....

Happy St. Joes!!! Den Svatého Josefa (St. Joseph's Day) Pekne-li na Svatého Josefa, bývá dobrý rok. "If it is nice on St. Joseph's Day, it will usually be a good year." Here in Cedar Rapids' Czech Village, the taverns are serving red beer, the bakeries are selling red bread, and the...

    New tool

Here's an interesting tool (if you got $10,000 to spare). http://www.versalaser.com/english/index.html Actually, you might be able to justify it if you had a model railroad-related business and the cost was a business expense.

    Chrome

Anybody use this stuff? http://66.70.211.27/foil.htm It's some kind of thin, adhesive-backed foil used for modelling chrome on model cars. Wouldn't a VO-1000 look funky with a chrome grille? :D

    Thatched Roofs

    MORE N Scale Steam

On the Bachmann forum they just announced that Bachmann will be making, in N scale, a 4-6-0 (Ten Wheeler) and a 2-6-6-2 (Mallet?). Combined with the just announced 2-6-0 Mogul from Atlas, this could cause a lot of light wallets!

For what's is worth, here's a repost of a thread on the Trains.com forum with a heads up for mail orders from the US to Canada:

    Uses for engraving tool

I've somehow inherited a Dremel engraving tool (with two teenage boys plus one older all sorts of things appear - and disappear - around here.) Now that I've got my name or intitials engraved on all my tools, etc., I'm trying to think of another use for it. It doesn't seem to have much...

    Diamond Plate

Just noticed this and thought I'd pass it along. The foil material used for some medicine "blister packs" has a texture that resembles the diamond-plate steel plates that is used for many modern-day walkways, etc. Pretty close to the right color too.

    Kudos to 4Nscale

Late yesterday I was ordering some some stuff from 4Nscale.com. As soon as I hit the "submit" button I realized that I had mixed up the order!! So I sent them an Email asking them to change the order. Got a reply today (Sunday!) saying "No problem, we will make the change."

    Designing Easements

Since I just finished designing and am in the process of laying out a track plan incorporating easements, I'd thought I'd describe how I did them. Briefly, an easement provides a transition between straight and curved tracks. Without them, the track curvature changes abruptly from an infinite...

    Burma-Shave

Remember the old Burma-Shave signs, where there were four signs, each with a line out of a silly poem and a final sign that said "Burma-Shave"? Over the weekend I bought several bars of shaving soap - the kind you put in a mug and use a shaving brush to work up a lather. (Probably not many of...

    Fantasy Industries

A couple of days ago over lunch at work several of us got off onto this weird discussion about using a Middle Earth (i.e. Lord of the Rings) type location for a model railroad, and what industries could be modeled. Here's some of our brainstorms: 1. Mythryl ore mine (Metal used to make Elven...

    Question

Here's an area I've been eyeing as a possible permanent layout location. The diagram shows the facing wall of the area - I can come out maybe 40" from it. The sofa and shelves can maybe be moved, but the file cabinet will probably have to stay, and the window obviously cannot be moved (duh)...
