I noticed you laminated the colored planking sheets...was that something the instructions suggested?
Cheers!

Jim...

Yes, that's what the instructions called for. So far I'm doing this by the number with whatever the plans call for..

Have added the inner cabin bulkheads and doors.

Have added the upper deck (quarterdeck ?) This was glued on 1m card. I said before that my planking was glued on 1m, when it was actually done on .05m.

Peter,

nice subject and looking great so far, you don't see these builds very often on this forum.
Just got a message that the other double kit(HMS Alert/Le Courier) from Shipyard ( http://www.model-shipyard.com/ ) is on it's way to me.

Cheers,
Richard

Hello Richard..

Not sure if you received your "HMS Alert" yet, but here is the start of a build report on a Polish forum. Looks quite nice so far.. Though this is the box set...

Peter,

I received the kit a couple of weeks ago but have to shelve it because of a couple other projects.
Great link, looks like the 1/72 'multi-media' kit.

Coming along very nicely, Peter!

Hmmm.... 0.5 mm card, huh? That's good too know, otherwise it might have been a bit too stiff to plank, I would imagine. Still, obviously stiff enough to avoid those warping problems across those gaps between the formers.

Beautiful work as usual, Peter!

Cheers!

base

Figured I would get the base ready so I would have something to set the model on while working..

Here's the base glued up and putty applied, then sanded smooth.

Here I applied a coat of paint, and then sanded smooth again.

For the finish, I used a coat of "Liquitex" Dark Umber.. when dry, I gave it a coat of "Future".. let that dry, and then a light buffing with a piece of silk, and then one more coat of Future for a nice semi-gloss finish..

What a great build thread for a great historic piece.

Thanks Gerardo for the comment... Next up was adding the planking to the stern.

I've filled and sanded/beveled smooth the stern.

Here's the stern piece glued up on .05m stock, and I've cut out the openings.

Have glued the part to the rear, and used the eyebolts to help line up the piece.

Have carefully added the upper section, and blended in the colors with oil pastels.

Wow, that's a pretty nice display stand, Peter! Great job!

I am enjoying the many photos, which, by the way, are quite excellent.

The transom looks like it went on very well...guess the hull planking is coming up soon.

Superb work, Peter!

Cheers!

Jim.. Thanks for naming the area (transom) for me. And if you notice anything else, speak up.. all help appreciated.

I've started laying the outside planks. Shimming with thin pieces of card if I feel that I'm getting a cupping between frames. Also beveling the next set of planks where it will butt to the bottom of the row before it. It will give me a tighter joint, especially as the pieces start to curve down the hull.

outside planking

Have finished the outside planking.. You can see in some of the photos where I have use card shims to flush up to the ajoining piece where needed. All gaps were filled in with oil pastels, and then rubbed with a soft cloth to blend in with the planking..

Wow, great job on the outter planking, Peter!

Nice, tight joints, beautifully finished job.

Neat idea of using shims to help align the adjoining planks.

Keep at it, mate!

Cheers!

That planking job is just fabulous! It makes me want to do a sailing ship again (resisting the temptation, come on, you know you can resist...)

The urge has returned to do a little more work on the Nina..

Here I finished the planking, and have added the keel.. plus doing a little filling of the gaps with acrylic paint and then blending the color into the hull with a soft damp cloth.
