    most "powerful" loc?

Well, I guess all of them... I think that the weight of a loc, will affect it's starting tractive effort so a 3000hp Diesel Electric that weighs 250 tons has more starting traction that a 9500 200 ton electric... but surely there is an undisputed king, no? Maybe the EMD 6000? or IORE?

Big thanks to Don (aka EZ)

Just got back for Don's house today with my German Marklin locomotive which need a way to convert 18 V AC to 12 V DC for a fan (I use it to keep the main electronics cool for out door G scale track). Don sat at his work bench (an impressive set up), and proceded to manufacture a component...

    Academy Nominations for June 2005

I nominate Ray's thread on pantograph as it hits on a little discussed topic that is dear to my heart as a fan of the German electrics. here is his thread: http://www.the-gauge.com/showthread.php?t=7229

    Nye lube, thoughs and opinions...

Thanks Tom, I use you products on my Marklin HO and 1 Gauge, and so far no problem. I had first thought that a problem with my 1 Gauge was due to the oil, but later found out it was a problem of low power output on my controller. The loc draws about 2.5amps and the controller can only...

    installing some small fans..

yup, this one is a 12V DC, and draws about .12 amps.. it's about 50mm square, and made by evercool (they're on the web). There are three wires coming out of it, a plus, a ground, and a signal for speed (yellow, which I trim off as I don't need it)... There is a space about 1.5" tall, and...

    most "powerful" loc?

I wonder, what is basically the most powerful loc in use today? is it the IORE at 2x7000 hp or would it be more fairly the Br182 at 9500 hp, since the IORE is infact two units? Though I would guess the IORE has more traction per unit do to the ballast weight. Thanks

Running behind Europe's biggest active steam engine

Great photo's thanks... were you able to find out if this was a captured loc from Germany after the War (reparations)? It looks an lot like either a BR01 or Br03.

    installing some small fans..

Hi Don thanks for that info.. My only concern is space, I don't have much more than 1" by 1/2" to put such a bridge rectifier in. Ideally if I could find a small AC fan that runs on 16v, that would make it simple. The only ones I could find need 110v or 220v which is not at all what I...

    installing some small fans..

Ray, I think that you nailed it, the fans (I have 3) run in one direction only, so I am assuming the AC will not "harm" them. I have two fans mounted near the motors, which spin up as the motor speeds up, and the 3rd mounted in the electronics bay and is on constantly (being powered by AC)...

    installing some small fans..

I am going to install a couple of cooling fans inside on of my hotter running 1 gauge locs. Especially with running it outdoors here in AZ, the added air circulation will help keep the circuitry from frying. So here is my question. I can get very good quality, and inexpensive fans from the...

My dad passed away last night.

I know I'm late to this thread... but having lost my dad too (10 years ago now at age 81) I know what you're going thru. His generation was the last great generation. I'm sure he'll be missed by many! God bless and he'll be in my prayers. Sam

    Nye lube, thoughs and opinions...

Yeah, I keep log sheets of how many operating hours I have on them. I use close estimates as I'm not actually running a stop watch. How do you know if a loc is over oiled though? I can't see any standing oil on the gears, nor do I see any dripping under the loc... is there a sure way to...

    Nye lube, thoughs and opinions...

Thanks Russ.. I lube them as per the maintenance instructions provided by Marklin... 50 hours HO and 20 hours 1 gauge... how would you do it? I know some wait till they "need" it, but I have no idea what that means... I prefer to go from my log sheets that I keep for all my items.

    Nye lube, thoughs and opinions...

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I am very low on oil. I generally oil my HO every 40-50 hours and my 1 Gauge every 20, all bearings with one drop, and the motors as recommended by the manufacturer. Their website is www.nyelubricants.com My question is, I've heard that Nye makes...
