I know how you feel, been there, done that. I keep coming back to O scale, 2 rail, you just can't beat it.
Now I'm retired I'm having a ball with it, you only live once, so blow the expence.

Keep an eye on ebay, you might get lucky.
These old Rivarossi locos build into nice models with a bit of work.
They run surprisingly well, smooth and quiet.

This last Pic. shows an HO scale GP7 as comparison to size.
She's a BIG Loco, measures 2ft. long overall.
The motor for the front driver set is hidden in the front cylinder block.

Indiana Harbor Belt Locos and bashed them into an 2-6-6-4

don't see on every Layout.

I would say Layouts are smaller and don't seem to last as long as the U.S.
