And on a related note, rubbing some ordinary blackboard chalk into the teeth of the file before putting it to work will help to keep the material from sticking and building up on the file.

A cedar shingle can be used for the transition, but may be to abrupt for many of the newer, longer engines - anything longer than an EMD 60-series may bottom out at the crest.

Walthers makes an EMD 567 engine in kit form.
