Where can I buy the components to hand lay my own rail?

I appreciate the response. This question was in regards to NON-Proto87 track because I'm considering normal ho83 rail as well. I wasn't aware at the time of my previous post that if I went Proto:87, I would be restricted in which type of cars I could run and would in fact have to replace the...

Where can I buy the components to hand lay my own rail?

I'm looking for the pieces to lay my own track. Things like rail(HO 83), spikes, tieplates, etc. I guess I'm a little surprised that I'm having so much trouble finding parts to do this. I could only find 1 hobby shop in my area selling rail and Fast Tracks on the internet. Any others? tks

    Newbie Questions

I just went to a train show in my area last weekend. Up in Wheaton, IL. My first one, it turned out to be a swap meet more than anything, but I did meet 2/3 very cool people. I met the creator of "Magic Water", Dave Williams and a couple out of St. Louis named Bill & Lois Hall. Dave had a great...

    Newbie Questions

I hope I can explain this clearly. The angle is not from the top to the bottom of the rail. If that were the case, 1 set of rails would "ride up" over the other set. No, It is an angle cut that runs from 1 side of the rail to the other. This way the top of the rails remain at the same height but...

    Newbie Questions

Proto87 wheels aye. Wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the tip and I guess I would put that in the negative column for Proto87. Although I want realism, I also want functionality. I don't want to be restricted to certain items. As I said in my original post(in another thread), I want DCC, but I...

    Newbie Questions

    - Been mostly reading and learning the past 3 months which has given rise to many questions. I'll list em here. Some preliminary info. I'm modeling/copying the Central Midland layout from the Atlas #13 catalog. It is an "L" shape, 5' widths with sides of 12' by 10'. I'm in the process of...

To Solder Track Joints Or Not To Solder?

Nice thinking. You got me thinking as well. I bet "JB Weld" would also work but who wants to wait 24 hours for it to set? My vote is to use wooden ties and forget about melting the plastic ones. Might even add to the visual if the wooden tie gets a burn mark in it?

Is there a common tool for cutting flex track?

I've been asking that very question myself. And look what I found today. Harbor Freight - Mini Cut-off Saw I haven't tried it yet, but I'm think'in this is just what the doctor ordered to cut track.

    HO Code 83 Track?

Has anyone had any experience with the Proto:87 track? P87list3 This is the most realistic track I've seen thus far. However, It goes without saying that beyond looking good, the track has to be reliable and not derail the train every 5 minutes. tks...

    HO Code 83 Track?

Hello all, My 1st post. I'm new to this hobby so I've been reading and learning for the last 2 months. I've decided on a layout. Central Midlands from the Atlas catalog. I've got a lot of time(on disability) and not quite so much money which is why I'm looking at this as a very long-term...
