    Weird steam locomotive

<quote>the well known large US steam engines...Big Boys, Challengers, Yellowstones, Alleghanies, N&W Class As, and such were NOT mallets. A mallet recycles steam while these super power locomotives generated enough steam to not need recycled steam.</quote> Wasn't the definition of a Mallet one...

Opening a 3 truck Rivarossi Heisler

If it is anything like the two-truck version, there should be a screw in the stack that will remove the upper portion of the boiler. once that is removed, there will be a screw in front of the cab, and one more in the water-filler hatch on the fuel bunker. Once those are removed the cab will...

    Can you buy this?

KCS - the scale situation you are talking about is due to the fact that they don't wantthe incredible weight of the loco on the scale track, so they use the turnouts to run it on the separate rails. The cars being weighed will ride on the rails that actually attach to the scale.

Question about an old-style Rivarossi Big Boy

If the Big Boy is like my old Rivarossi mallet, then all drivers ARE drive wheels. The motor drive the third driver set on each engine via gearing, and the side rods transmit that power to the other drivers. I've seen older brass triplex locos that have a motor for EACH engine...that means...

    RR-Track Software comments

If you're looking for a down-n-dirty planner that is compatible with the pre-made snap-track out there, Atlas RTS is probably the easiest. While there is still some descrepancy between what you place in the program vs. what you can do in "real life", it is the closest in telling you what track...

    MofW Car drive mechanism failed

The car itself is an MDC/Roundhouse boxcab deisel. It uses the same chassis as their climax kit. Unless you want to beg, borrow or steal (or ebay), those specific universal joints are going to be very hard to come by. MDC/Roundhouse was bought out, and the new company is not offering parts for...

It's kinda dead in here - On30 kitbash projects

Right now I'm not. I haven't actually started laying track. My intention is to use Atlas Code 83 flextrack and switches for this first layout. I can always rip it out and redo later. I'll attach the cork roadbed first, probably using wood glue or white glue as I've had great success with...

It's kinda dead in here - On30 kitbash projects

Ok, seeing as how it has gotten a little quiet in here, I'll post a few pictures of On30 projects that myself and my step-father-in-law have been working on. We'll start with mine, as my time has also been taken up working on bookcases for my office/train room. I took a 1/43rd scale 1934...

Using DC to power a DCC loco?

Haven't seen this question answered yet. I have a few negines that have built-in DCC Decoders. Some are Bachmann On30 engines, so I can remove the decoders if necessary, but one is a Precision Craft On30 Goose, which I'm not sure I can remove the decoder. Will it hurt the Decoder to be...

Loco runs off track, not on.

Actually, after carefully reading your symptoms, I'd bet something on that last set of drivers is shorted to the frame. THat's the only reason it would arc and cause a short like that. But again, it's probably safer to let Bachmann do the repairs unless you're VERY sure of what you're doing.
