What Headlamp Bulb for O-Scale Lionel?

One suggestion: Take the bulb to Radio Shack. They have a good assortment of small bulbs, and would likely have something the right size in 18 volts.

Anyone model the Western Auto Parts Building?

I'd love to see it. I have plenty of fond memories in Kansas City that involved driving past that building either coming or going or both.

    How-to make ground cover...

That's definitely a return to the old school. For that matter, from the 1920s through probably the 1950s, Lionel used to sell dyed sawdust as ground cover, but it didn't look like that (when they were going for realism, Lionel's layout builders used something else). The sawdust you made looks...

Anyone model the Western Auto Parts Building?

I've never seen anyone do it but I agree it would be a prime candidate for modeling. It's an iconic brand, and the building is interesting looking. I was born in KC and visited a lot in my youth because I have so much family there, and the Kansas City skyline wouldn't be the same at all without...

    Been awhile...

Bob, that's brilliant, and should be entirely possible to adapt to other scales too.

Old Magnuson, DPM, Creative Design Models kits

Those are some beautiful pics! Google turned up some information, and thanks to that and some help from the people on the Model Railroader forum, I was able to figure out that two of the Magnuson kits were late production, made of styrene and one is a resin kit of earlier design. One of the...

Old Magnuson, DPM, Creative Design Models kits

Hi, I've come into possession of some HO building kits, unbuilt and still in the package. Since I'm a 3-rail O gauger, I don't know much about them. I have several styrene kits from Magnuson, which from what I can tell was founded by the same people who founded Design Preservation Models...

Craft Paint Colors / Use ?

Here's a web page listing some Polyscale colors and the closest Delta Ceramcoat match for each: http://www.arizonarails.com/paint.html I use acrylic paints for painting. I usually buy Delta, but if I find a stash of paints at garage and yard sales and the price is right and enough of the...

    I Hate Decals.

Try spraying a gloss coat onto the car before you apply the decal. Decals stick much better to a glossy surface than a flat surface. If you want a satin surface, spray the whole thing with Testors Dullcote after the decals have dried.

How Do I get The Doors Off A Boxcar?

Depends on the brand and vintage of car, but often the door guides are held on by metal guides that are pressed onto tabs and then melted over. File off the melted part, and the guide will lift off, and then you can remove the door. You'll probably have to glue the guide back into place when you...

N scale trading fodder--fix it up first?

Thanks for the advice. Without a loop of track my testing options are limited. I know I have a couple of HO transformers somewhere that I'll have to use to test it. I'll just flip it over and run a couple of wires straight to the wheels and see if the motor runs. That's not necessarily a good...

N scale trading fodder--fix it up first?

I bought a secondhand Bachmann starter set this weekend. N scale is not my thang--I do vintage O gauge. But the price was really good so I bought it to increase my trading stock. I know it must be fairly recent, because it came with the Bachmann E-Z track with integrated plastic roadbed. When...

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] Part I

Tom, I'm sorry to hear about the job. I had it happen to me twice last year. The second time I wasn't exactly let go--I was a contractor, so they just let my contract expire. I seem to have landed on my feet now though. Similar story. First time I was working for a not-for-profit, they've been...

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] Part I

I'll see if I can snap a couple and put them up here.

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] Part I

Woo hoo, between the long weekend and tonight, I managed to get some serious layout work done. Long-neglected Marx locomotives with finicky e-units are great for finding the flaws in your trackwork. I still have a long, long way to go, but I've got my Life-Like grass paper down--I'm going for...
