Peter, Typical narrow gauge RGS, CS etc boxcars are about "halfway" between your N scale cars and, for instance, an HO 40' to 50' boxcar visually.... FWIW, Dennis Shingletown, CA. http://www.freewebs.com/bucksowin/

Drop in and look around my site. Looks like we gots a lot in common! My 1:48 logging NG resides in the bedroom too..... (The "master" bedroom BTW, I married a great sidekick!) Dennis http://www.freewebs.com/bucksowin/

    Informative web site on logging

Thanks! That's an incredible photo, as good as it gets! That big double drum dwarfs the little vertical spool donkey that resides in my neck of the woods! Thanks much for the link...:thumb: Dennis http://www.freewebs.com/bucksowin/

Where have all the logging modelers gone.

You're most welcome. They're a serious bunch of RR loggers at 4L with lots of knowledge of the topic and a vast network of input. Forumwise, it's kinda like comparing the "NG&SL Gazette" with "Model Railroader" when it comes to logging if you catch my drift.... Information? You'll get it...

    Jackpot! (logging info sites)

IMO, one of THE best sources for logging info is: http://www.steaminthewoods.com FWIW, Dennis http://www.freewebs.com/bucksowin/

    Small portable sawmill info needed

Woodland Scenics used to make a tiny HO portable sawmill, small enough to fit on a flatcar! FWIW, Dennis http://www.freewebs.com/bucksowin/

Where have all the logging modelers gone.

Hmmmm..... Probably most of them are at Yahoo's 4L forum.... (Loyal Legion of Logged-on Loggers) Dennis IBCS http://www.freewebs.com/bucksowin/

    MDC Shay Tip Sheet

Yep, as mentioned, Jeff Johnson's book. Anyone attempting this build should get this book at the same time as they get the kit! You'll find out how to build a good runner with the stock parts (no jumping and binding) and how to build a GREAT runner with some inexpensive parts...(noteably, NWSL...

    DCC in a Bach On30 0-4-0 Porter?

Just a thought or two... DCC requires CLEAN track and wheels to perform well, so keep that part as sanitary as possible. Polishing the rail with Flitz seems to work very well.... Also, one could consider adding a little weight both for more drawbar muscle and for better contact between...

    DCC in a Bach On30 0-4-0 Porter?

Gee, my experience is so vastly different that I wonder if we're talking about the same lokie! Far from being "junk", mine has run beautifully straight from the box and can "creep" right alongside my Spectrum Shays! I have "heard" of the wipers giving trouble and requiring a different spring...
