Ladies and Gentlemen,

We have just opened a NEW category called "Alternative Materials".
This category is for models made of materials other than paper (i.e. Plastic, Resin, Wood, est).
So if you are interested in building a model out of something other than paper, you can post it in the appropriate section.

So ENJOY!!!

Now this will raise a conundrum for me. Many of my models are of mixed media, but I will try to adapt. overcome, persevere. This should make for an expansion and a good mix for all kinds of models. I like the idea.

I am glad to hear that this is will be well received.

@micahrogers, You were ONE of the inspirations for adding this category. As you have seen, I have already moved your threads to the "PLASTIC" Section for you and yours are the first to be featured in the new category!

@spaceagent-9, I have heard of a molding putty that cures in the oven, but I can not remember (for the life of me) what the name of the stuff is. Yes, you can make a model using such and post photos of it in the "OTHER MATERIALS" Section.

@silveroxide, Thank you for reminding me, I just added "Mixed Medium" Section for members (like yourself) who build models with mixed media. So there is no need for you to adapt to anything!!!

As this category grows and I see that there is a need for more sections (based on what materials become more popular), there will be changes made accordingly.

ENJOY!!!

GREAT IDEA!!!! I was just thinking about sharing with you one of my "long term" projects who didn't fit in any of the Zealot categories... Well, see you soon there!

@spaceagent-9 The "fimo" is a molding paste that can be used in the way you describe. I don't think this is the right one you are talking about but it is very similar. My sons used it for many works. It's fine because is available in a great variety of colours and finishing and, once cooled, it is very hard. See here: http://www.staedtler.com/en/inspirations/for-creative-hobby-users/

This category should cover anything and everything under the Sun. Why limit what we do. There is a place for "Paper Only", but there is also a place for everything else, and now, officially! :)

This is fantastic! I have so many plastic kits built, mostly sci fi, that I'd like to share pics of, thanks for setting this up! Probably some BSG stuff to start with first....

I got some plumber's grey epoxy at ace of spades hardware that mixes in your fingers, and you can mold it like oil based clay, ten minutes later its as hard as a fake lawn rock. you can paint it. its about ten bucks for a large handful.

You must have been thinking of polymer clay, which happens to be one of my favorite materials other than paper. I'm going to check out the new section. I suppose the aluminum can guys will turn up there as well.

yes Rhaven Black!
that's the stuff. my nurse in the hospital made armor from it for comicons and stuff. you heat it with a hair dryer or heat gun and then mold it and when it cools it maintains the molded shape!!

Well, I might add that most polymer clays have require heating to 250-300 degrees F for at least 1/2 hour, though some people do seem to manage in a pinch with a heat gun. I use a larger dedicated toaster oven. The clay is labeled "non-toxic" but can produce harmful fumes if accidentally burned.

Well folks,
I am ELATED to see that this category is a success and is well received!!!
I am looking forward to seeing work in EVERY material category. If there is a particular material that has not been listed and there is a GREAT DEAL of interest in it and I see that there are enough threads that are focusing on that one material, I will open another category for that material.

We won't not be too anal though, I mean realistically, Silveroxide's ship should stay in where it's at. I do not think there are any "Paper purists', and if there are, maybe we should have a category for them. Wood is unrealized paper. String has always been considered a necessity in ship building as has chain for anchors.

Plastic Models, if we get enough people doing them, may have to really have a more defined space. A paper model with some alternative components should stay in the same category (which personally I feel Silveroxide's models fall in). Plastic, vacuum form models, or any other thing, like foamies, should go into the alternative, and if they are Radio Controlled, then put them there. Just some guidelines, common sense. The goal is to enhance the Paper Model Hobby, and to include other hobbyists who model in other mediums and who enjoy this forum, and wish to express themselves here. Why let a piece of paper separate us? Paper should unite, not divide. It does unite here. Well, only because the members allow it too. The forum grows, it changes, it lives, and just a reminder to those who may have forgotten, .....

ALL BANS WERE LIFTED. There is no reason for anyone not to participate, unless they just don't want to. That does not include Spammers, of course. :)

Wood is unrealized paper.

I've seen some absolutely incredible wooden scratchbuilds posted at woodworking forums such as Lumberjocks. I know there are forums for wooden ship builders, but I think is might be fun to see a variety of wood projects, perhaps in this new category. Something I've been meaning to try sometime is adapting paper model patterns to wood-- just for fun. I suspect most designs could be managed with with a bit of modification here and there.

ace hardware-
oaty fix-it stick masilla fix-it-stick all purpose bonding putty. grey mix in your hand like clay that hardens in ten minutes to a half an hour epoxy rock hard. wash your hands after. make you own molds. about 8 bucks for a a little more than two golf balls sized clump. use your paper particle and glue waste putty in the mold for your own parts or melt clear sheet and press mold over it, laminate strips of glue and paper over positives made from it and sand clean for compound curved parts, etc. great stuff and needful and useful.
