Project: GODZILLA CRAFT
Start Date: 3/2014
Designed by: Kumon (Publishing?)
Pages: 24
Why: Long time fan – new movie coming out.

Tools:
Scissors and an X-ACTO knife if needed
Metal wire (from clothes hanger) for holding down glued flaps inside the model
Epson R320 Printer

Materials:
Craft Book
Elmer's Craft-Bond Paper Craft Glue Gel
Kodak Photo Paper (kinda glossy - the cheap thin one - good for buttons)

To celebrate 60 years of Godzilla (and yes I do own all of the movies :D), I’ll start with the King Of The Monsters himself and them move on to Mothra and King Ghidorah.

This project is from a (I’m guessing) 2005 retail book of the Godzilla from the Heisei era - where you are to cut the pages/parts out – they are not perforated. It is a good weight cardstock. Since the entire book is in Japanese, and I want to be able to recover from mistakes, I have scanned all the parts pages and will print them out on my usual medium. This will make it easier to recover from mistakes and open the possibility of blowing it up to be larger - but lets not get carried away on this first attempt.

To achieve a good scan, the pages must be flat – folding the book back does not achieve the best results, so I carefully cut the pages from the book.

Here are some shots of the book.

Cutting out the pages...

Progress so far is cutting out the pages and scanning them. Still need to finish Lego Luke! :)

WOW! This is one of the finest Godzilla paper models out there. If I remember correctly they published two other kits, Mothra and King Ghidorah. The figures are based on the movie "Godzilla vs. Mothra vs. King Ghidorah". Great start so far,I'll be watching closely! :)

The one and only "REAL" Godzilla!! I love it! Smart to Scan, build the scan, not the source!! :)

So, taking a mini-break from Lego Luke to print the big "G" out.
Scanned without color management and printed without it too. Why? Had some weird results with other projects so thought I'd try keeping it neutral. Is it better or worse? - I don't know.
In the shot below from left to right is the original page, a raw printed page and a "auto enhanced" via Elements 11 printed page.

I'm going with the "auto-enhanced" as manually tweaking 24 pages will make my eyes fall out...

Can't wait to start this one!:D

Hello Davestar,

where is this craft book avaiable? And how tall will big "G" be?

I'm pleased to see your build.

Hi Andy and OmegaSupremeXXX,

Sorry - been out sick and also had to replace my old XP computer...been out of touch.
Actually found this book on Amazon - there was only one at the time. Try searching otaku com
The back of the book states 570 m/m long and 420 m/m tall - I believe that's about 16.5 inches tall

Predictions:
1. I won't finish Godzilla before the movie.
2. I will build the head and put it on Lego Luke and take a photo at some point.

Thanks for your remarks.

I am sorry to hear that you were sick. I am glad to see that you are back though (even with upgrading your computer).

By all means, take your time the build. There is no rush. ENJOY the build and do your best in building it.
That is what this hobby is all about. ENJOYMENT!!!
Thank you for the finished specs.

The one and only "REAL" Godzilla!!

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. While the casual viewer might think Godzilla always looked the same in the Japanese series, he was, in fact considerably different in almost every film. For some reason they could never seem to decide how his head should look, so he changed all the time. Check them out.

The new guy had a thicker neck, smaller head and narrower snout than I recall, but I suspect if this had been a Toho production he would have looked just as different from the '50s-'60s versions.

That's a really detailed model. I like that they seem to have done him in more of a gray. I recall back in the day painting my Aurora 'zilla green according to the box art and then thinking it really didn't seem right.

Any "Godzilla" other than that "Big Lizard Movie" with Mathew Broderick in it, is a "real" Godzilla. The one with Mathew Broderick was in the "Big Lizard attacks New York" movie genre, the only one I believe. "Cloverfield" does not fall into that genre, "Cloverfield" was a good movie, IMHO, and certainly it would have eaten Mathew Broderick, though I sure he would have spit him out. The original "Godzilla" movie came out the year I was born, and that movie scared that cr@p out of me when I first saw it, at around 4 or 5 years old. Television back then was so bad, the news looked as real as Godzilla did! People forget that. You could see things on T.V. that looked monstrous, like "Chiller Theater", I think the scariest and the most horrifying was this show called "Father Knows Best"! It was about some honky dude that had all the answers to everything wasn't religious, or had no political affiliation. Horrible series, don't watch it, it will give you nightmares! Look how creepily his "daughter" was looking at him, and how his "wife" condoned it. No, Godzilla was far more realistic and believable than "Father Knows Best"! Just look how casual "Godzilla" looks in this rare candid picture of his out with his family in the picture below. They look like their having fun, not like some robots and a "Stepford Wife" adoring some corporate image of an American father. Godzilla was a much better father image. :)
