The story everyone knows, but the ship is almost unknown! just a wonder, why there no kit already exist!? not to forget, that the studio model was used not only for one alien race!!!

so here now the story how the model comes alive!
first the genesis

sadly there no good view exist in the internet and the 2-side-view at Ex-Astris has some mistakes i made more than less an own interpretation of this ship!

This is awesome! This model was on my todo list, BTW, so thank you very much for tackling this one, D-Whale! :)

The episode is still one of my favourites. It was critized a lot because the Enterprise was firing her phasers - through her photon torpedo emitters in one scene! ;)

Wasn't that ship re-used later on DS9 as a T'Lani cruiser in the ep "Armageddon Game" / "Das Harvester-Desaster"? Maybe this helps a bit:

I have the TNG DVD box sets and all space scenes of the DS9 ep on DVD. If you need any screenshots from a specific episode don't hesitate to contact me.;)

thanks for your offer, but if it is not the remastered Blu-ray version all pictures are like the current available in the net!
the most picture i have and there would be only one picture helpfull from Christies auction! sadly the pic is small and unsharp! also it is just a single picture and there is also no more from this model at "st-bilder.de", where the most pictures are from the auction!

the ship was so often changed, that also Rick Sternbach cant remember, how often it was! good that there is a source:

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/talarian-observation.htm

i used the pictures there and saw, that the 2-side-view picture was wrong! that is too much to explain all!

BTW: feel free to make an own version! ;)

as last i will show how big the ship is  and it just the front end!!!

"Darmok on the sea, his sails unfurled, Darmok at rest.". (not meant to be a direct quote). One of the best TNG Episodes. Forget about the nitpicking, It was the first time they showed them communicating with a species that really though differently. Paul Winfield, as "Darmok" was incredible. The biggest problem I felt was typical of TNG. Too Episodic. These beings could blow the Enterprise out of space, yet, they never showed any further communication with them? They would have been quite useful against the Jem'Hadar, or the Borg, etc. Star Trek, not enough continuity, and too episodic.

Great choice for a model D_Whale. Superb choice!! :)

WOW! Impressive comparison (albeit it is the NX-01, not the "D" ;)). I'm looking forward to your result. The ex-astris link is very insightful. I was suspecting the Talarian vessel to be related to the Darmok / T'Lani cruiser but it never occured to me that it actually was THE SAME model! With all these variants it would be great fun to make some add-on sets...

Which software do you use to make the CG model?

unfortunately i must build my ENT-D again! the ship is destroyed! but no reason to be sad!

I made the ship with Metaseq, but the render shots are from Pepakura v.2 and v.3! the render engine of metaseq is not the best!
and i made the aztec texture or "urban camo" with Corel Photopaint, never thought how easy it is with Corel :eek:ops:

I always liked the stardrive section by itself, it looked tough and what warf said about it being a great warship.

This looks GREAT so far!
The last two photos (with the three sets of louvers), looks like you could (easily) make real louvers for those components.

well, the model has 11 pages and i dont want to make too much small pieces! i can do the parts with a 3D-texture and everybody (like Svarok) who wants to do more greebles or layering details! not everybody has the same skill level in model building!

May I suggest: Make two versions, one for the beginners and one for the pros (this is what I occasionally do). This ship is so prominent that it deserves a proper representation, so please do not make it too small or too simplified! :)

Imagine of Darmok was a alien who loved eating bipedal aliens! It would be, "Darmork tried to eat Picard at Tanagra, Darmok at rest, Darmok Hungry." :)
