someone please do something with this. If I had a car altenator and a 12 v battery and tail light, some big magnets, I would see how many I could charge up during a certain amount of time. could replace solar panel charging in some areas.

That is fake. The fan does not put out enough to power the bulb. I doubt you could power a single LED (maybe) with that. It was debunked. I do like the idea of a working Windmill model using those round strong magnets though. By having the magnets move, no brushes or commutator would be needed. :)

Fun is fun but when people do this, they really turn off people who could otherwise be interested, and just turn away. Making electricity is fun, and not really hard to do/ Using this simple circuit you can fabricate a generator out of paper wire and a magnet, the stronger the better, the more windings, the stronger. The tube is a winding of copper wire. If you place the axis of the shaft in the middle of the tube that you wrapped that copper around, a nice progressive coil, the two ends of the wire will be the source of the "AC" electricity, this will not power an LED, as that needs DC. To get the DC from this, you would make a Bridge Rectifier. Extremely easy. Just four Diodes. See image 2 On a Diode, the side with the line is the negative side. See image 3.

You just attach either wire from the coil to the "Bridge Rectifier. The wavy lines are attached to the Bridge Rectifier (top and bottom in the picture), from the coil. The DC current will come out of the left side (negative), and the right side (positive). For a LED, the fat terminal is Negative (inside the LED), if the LED is new, the short Leg of the LED is the Negative side (which leads to the fat wire inside the LED!), Cathode is always Negative, Anode is always positive. With these pictures, you can make a simple working windmill, or hand generator. One strong enough to charge a Cell phone if you make it beefy enough, and it doesn't have to be all that beefy. :)

If you wish, I could draw up a simple picture of something you coul put together. If you have any Lego gears and shafts, they work really well. I will have to go to Radio Shack and try and find some really strong magnets. Copper wire is copper wire, but you have to use the kind that has a thing clear insulation to it to wrap the coil, to get best results. :)

I was thinking of jumping up to a 12 volt car battery and alternator, some speaker magnets, and then have a spring wire / rod set up to pull the attractor magnet back and forth to keep the spin going. then see if I could trickle charge other kinds of batteries, that's going to take a while to pull together.

If you design a unit where the magnets are odd numbered, it is easier to start spinning, and you will not need a commutator. Newer designed windmills are spinning the magnets, not the coils. Spin the coils, you will need a commutator, brushes, friction, etc. :)

can you relate how many amps that is, or volts? maybe how fast it would recharge a 9 volt battery?
that's the way to build a windmill I think, tall as the propeller blade kind, each one with power out to grid, stacked up a pole, in a wind farm, the reservations are nothing but wind, and could be power farms. no birds killed as much anyway. they are probably driven mad by sound, or vision or magnetic misguidance. these kind could reduce kills. so that's two things going for that design. the coastlines have wind all the time too. easing the grid is a good idea and fossil fuels will last a little longer or kept in reserve for industry. great job!!

I live where I cant just go buy a pc fan and try the magnet ideas, and I don't think I have a race car electric engine on hand. but I would like to see how many batteries it might eventually charge in a given amount of time. I will notify you Zathros when I get one up and running.

by the way ,any one know what material would draw electrons into it, or how to create something that would work to make a static charge from the ambient earth magnetic field? I heard that long cable ham antennas draw almost an amp and 400 volt on some days, cant confirm it, but would like to see if there is a way to do a poor man's Tesla project. even if it only charges small batteries. thanks.

That is the volts showing. Amps were so low my meter wouldn't read them. electric motor cost $4.60 from Tower Hobbies, carbon shaft was$2 and the flanged ball bearings another $2 each.

Used to sell kits on eBay, but the supply of bearings went away, so stopped selling them. Built a couple of bigger ones to run a car alternator. One is going to go to a friends cabin up in the mountains. It is made using waterproof paper from Yupo Paper.

Original plan was to mount two of these to existing power poles and supplying power to the grid.

BTW measured the fan "wind speed" using a handheld anemometer. 9 mph at the turbine blade.

What you want is amps, not volts. You have to be careful with antennas because of the chance of a lightning strike. That makes collecting static electricity a bit dangerous,.. Benjamin Franklin could have killed himself so easily with that trick he performed. You could turn a small windmill and produce very small voltages, but the amperage would keep coming, even if it is a small trickle, it will eventually charge a battery. Trickle charging at no more than 2 amps is now recommended, and actually, a tiny bet less than 2 amps is ideal for keeping the batteries viable.

I like the omnidirectional aspect of MBauer's windmill. I have been interested in the kind below. Though the blades are thin, their total surface area is large, and they can be be made tall, with less mass. These things really can spins fast, so they made need a speed controllers, which could be a mechanical disc brake hooked up to a governor assembly, like the weighted balls use on steam engines. Less maintenance on something built well, that's mechanical, and it isn't using any electricity to work.

Zathros; if here was a diode blocking the way out of a capacitor on the blade, would the static charge fill it, and ground to the blade- and then drain off to a tickle charge,- to a battery -for a faster charge? would have to build one to figure it out. I don't know enough about this to think it out correctly.

i hesitate to talk about my amature experiments that almost killed me, but i have this strange idea that if you can open up a passage on the actual and factual subatomic field level, that if you have the right kind of draw that you can suck in electrons and positrons into some kind of storage from a syndrome, i dont know how tesla did it but i think he was doing stuff along these lines. kind of like tapping into a vast universal resource of all that connected power out there in the ''ghost particle'' range, that would just pour thru. i almost blew up a helium pump gas laser years ago trying to do this. i had to yank the power chord because i got scared by the syndrome ramping up so fast. it lasted 2 seconds before i pulled the plug and this ''harmless'' red laser burned into my house's wall. just putting this out there for anyone who might be able to measure this kind of syndrome.

the techinique i used was radium on copper bands on a wooden wheel,
spaced equally distant ,
and it spun and fed a stun gun's power supply from a very thin brush over the wheel.
the laser was powered by the 240,000 volt 3 amp stun gun directly from the prods
and the whole thing was grounded to a nail in a large half inch plywood sheet.

i thought it would feed very slowly and i would have all the time in the world, but it screamed and buzzed so fast and loud, and the laser beam was visible. i didnt want to be the victim of an explosion with glass shrapnel so i yanked the plug. thats about all i have done, but if i had a lab i would most certainly be the mad scientist!

Diodes do build up, by their nature, a capacitive effect, but it is not sufficient enough to amount top anything, though a diode matrix, set up properly, is how stun guns get their ridiculous voltages by multiplying the voltage by the diodes. If you are working with windmills however, the key is AMPS, not Voltage. AMPS will fill up any battery to capacity, Volts will not.

I good way to make an almost self starting windmill would be to make an odd amount of magnets to the coils, as this would make the windmill want to turn, as it cannot settle it. Also, if the magnets spin, there is no need for a commutator, or brushes, less friction, though you are turning more mass initially. The coils standing still need no moving parts to transfer the amperage.

Diode bridges get dangerous real fast, and you won't know they killed you because you will be dead. The same with Capacitors. They do not release the energy stored, and you have to calculate the rate of discharge based on the resistor used, and the Pythagorean Theorem. This stuff could get you in trouble real fast. I have a 100Meg O'Scope, Dual Trace, an expensive leak Tester, in circuit capacitor tester )measures the ESR or the capacitor, same one, by make and model # used on the U.S.Space Shuttle!), "Fox and Hound" circuit tracers, and an incredibly beefy Isolation transformer, yet I see people doing things that have none of what I have, and have stopped many who were about to kill, or severely disable themselves, and they are powered, without isolation to the current coming into the house with the potential of bring 1000's of amps into their homes. I read in a post somewhere where someone was suggesting the use of old motor oil as an insulator for capacitors, yeah, with all that carbon in it, that a blowup that would have been.


You must be very careful with this stuff. Postulate a theorem, then try and figure it out. Doing things for the heck of it can get you killed. Not only that, without documenting every stage of success and failure, you will not be able to keep track of what you have done, and may not be able to reproduce it. :)

, if your blade was made of metal, and somehow not isolated from the electronics, you are playing with death. The blades must be isolated so that non of the static energy produced by them goes anywhere but back into the ground. Blades must be electronically neutral, with respect to the rest of the electronics. Blades should be made on on conductive materials.

I agree completely, the runaway syndrome that happened with the laser was very scary. I know a guy in England who burned down his mother's flat by cooking hydrogen with a plug in ring tube that wasn't calculated right and started a hydrogen gas burn that wouldn't stop when unplugged. he ended up being freed by the human rights league from a mental hospital, but his mother disowned him and he had no home to go to. another guy out here in the desert hooked up diodes and capacitors to a hundred foot long cable antenna that he hung up 17 feet in the air /_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>_>\ and hooked it to his trailer electricity grid to sell power back to the power company and charged his entire frame, luckily no fire, but he was trapped inside his new faraday cage trailer for hours until it actually fell apart and he was freed. a few other horror stories of batteries exploding and melting stoves from other genius ideas that weren't thought out far enough. the best thing I ever heard was a guy using laptops for movie players and stereos, led spotlights for lamps and trailer fridges and stoves to run his entire garage studio off the grid with solar panels on a 12 volt 3 amp system. he even had a small hot water heater and crockpot oven. it was pretty cool to see him have all the luxuries for about 1200 bucks and then free electricity. he was a great old hippie and really enjoyed his small yard of used tire planters and bicycle powered rock tumblered colored scrap glass gravel yard patches. I walked him home one day when he was down by the bay flying a box kite and he showed me all his great stuff.
