Star Trek: TNG:- Wolf 359 Diorama - micro build log

@zathros Many thanks for all the info :). I'll refer back to it and digest it all a bit at a time. It's 30 years since I've done any electronics so I'm a wee bit rusty ;).

@spaceagent-9 Thanks again Jim :). As far as I know I'm the first to publish any card model photos of the Buran on the web. Searching for reference pics for Wolf 359 is getting kinda bizarre now - half the results are my own photos from this thread! lol

I'm not posting any build pics of this next one as I've covered it in another thread - it's Jim's, now familiar, Klingon cruiser:-

The command module pieces were too small for me to use to I used a tiny blob of blu tac instead. The damaged one will have the command module, left nacelle and part of the left 'wing' blown off. It's well on it's way and should be finished tomorrow.

It's weird when you see your own posts as reference material/ i found that out with a few of the models I Rendered. :)

Thanks all, again :).

This Klingon is dead;it is defunct; it has shuffled off this mortal coil; it has ceased to be - he's f'ing snuffed it! I had to have a wee homage to the Monty Python team here ;). The black welding rod shouldn't show against the black background.
Two more to go!

@spaceagent-9 Sorry Jim - I forgot to respond to the bop offer! I think I already downloaded it from your hosting site. I'll do a wee bit more research and see if there's any general consensus about the Klingons at Wolf 359. The only one I was sure of was a K'Tinga seen in a screen capture so that's why I've done two of them...

Leaving the USS Chekov for the mo', I've started on the last of my undamaged ships - the Nebula class USS Bellerophon. This thing is a monster! I'm using a design for the USS Sutherland which is tagged modelosdepapel.com.ar and is by "Edward" - I can't recall where I found it. I started with the ventral saucer sections and internal supports:-

Then moved to the dorsal saucer sections:-
02.JPG
Trying to join the halves with the internal supports and the gazillion tabs on the lower half was impossible - I ended up with a warped mess. I had to trim the internal supports to practically nothing and completely remove the outer ring (which was supposed to be notched, folded over and joined to the upper disc). I reprinted the lower disc, cut round the outer ring, joined it to the rim of the upper half then attached the lower half. This kept the saucer edge smooth and the discs unwarped. With that done I moved on to the pod, purely because it has the next largest pieces:-

By my standards this ship is huge - I haven't measured it yet, but the saucer must easily be 3 1/2" wide!

oh oh, no good choice! if i remember right, the model has some unfolding mistakes and this was a reason, that i create a new version!

@Cforrest900 Too right - it's a whopper! lol

@D-WHALE You're right there Marco! I tried this one for a bit of variety, but the unfold is very problematic and there are definitely easier ways to put a starship together. Your design is much better - unfortunately too many parts would be lost if I reduced the size to the scale I'm working with :(

@spaceagent-9 It's getting there :). Like I mentioned to Marco, the design is posing problems. There are loads of notched tabs that have to be glued and then folded under with no way to apply pressure to make the tabs stick.

Despite the vast number of notched tabs and the lack of purchase when gluing them I might as well persevere with this one since I only have the nacelles left to build. It's slow going because I can only affix two tabs at a time and I have to leave time for them to dry before moving to the next two.
I constructed the pod and cut the pieces for it's support structure:-
04.JPG
At first glance the support looked like it would be murder to join up, but it went together easily enough. The next section I worked on was the secondary hull, again with those bizarre notched tabs:-
05.JPG
For the lower half of the secondary hull I removed the tabs and used strips of paper to join the pieces. With most (if not all) of the other ships I could remove all the tabs, but the unique design of this model means that I've had to retain the vast majority of them.

at full scale it would be a heard job, at yor scale, whew........
keep it up, you are doing great!
how about a string of photorps on a wire using red clear beads stuck into the pod front center at the borg?

It still blows my mind away when I se you build these models at the scale that you are doing them in.
The fact that you are taking on this one (especially with all of the problems it has) is even more MIND BLOWING!!!
You are doing a STELLAR JOB (yes pun was intended) with this project!!!
I am AMAZED by the work that you are doing with this diorama!!!

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!

the other choice would be the Nebula from Zosho, just some folding lines disturb the texture! i guess the model is no more available, but you know who you can ask ;)

@spaceagent-9 I've been toying with the idea of torpedoes - the beads would have to be really, really small! Maybe a nick in the filament would produce a sparkle? I'd like to have torpedoes for the undamaged Klingon ship too, so I'll have a scout around 'a famous online auction site' (;)) and see what's available.

@Rhaven Blaack Many thanks yet again for the all compliments :).

@D-WHALE Zosho's does look good. I finished Edward's before seeing your message so maybe you can have a look below and let me know what you think?

The nacelle pylons joined up really well and the design gave exactly the right shape for attaching the nacelles and pod support.
06.JPG
I trimmed the tabs off the curved edges to maintain the correct profile and avoid 'bulking up'. The nacelles were the last parts to be constructed:-
07.JPG
I discarded the white ovals as I felt they were surplus to requirements. The tabs from the ends and the bussard collectors were removed and I joined everything with internal paper strips as usual. A cocktail stick helped in curving these pieces. Then all the sections were put together:-
08.JPG
All the other ships are dwarfed by this beastie:-
09.JPG
The Bellerophon is only slightly longer than the Yamaguchi - it's the width that makes it such a monster.
Well that's only the USS Chekov left, unless I can find room for some random ship pieces and Jim's proposed 'Planet of the Titans' Enterprise. The Chekov seems to be another Galaxy class kitbash with parts from the Oberth and Cheyenne classes - hull support pylons and marker pen nacelles, respectively. The rest will need to be scratch built. Oh goodie  lol.
