My first model.

Hi,

After my first post in the introduction section I would like to post my first build post.
If any of you veterans see something that could be improved I'm very willing to listen and learn.

It was hard to choose which model to start with but to me the Republic Star Destroyer would be a nice challenge, I'm building an improved version with extra docking bays etc.
The first problem I ran into was the depth of the lateral docking bays who where to deep so I had to shorten them but all worked out pretty well.

My first picture was taken just after preparing the botom hull for adding the bulkheads.

If it's okay I'll post some more pictures when the build progresses.

Hints, tips and constructive critics are more then welcome.

Thanks for your time.

Cheers,
Elko

It looks like you are off to a GREAT start.
Everything looks good so far.
By all means, continue the build thread (with a TON of photos).

Nice start. If you can cut something out that clean, that's half the battle. Looking forward to seeing the build process. These really help out others who may be considering the model. :)

Thanks for all your kind words

The more I'm working on this model the more excited I get about papercrafting. I got so many ideas in my head and there are so many fantastic models out-there (that I allready have downloaded) that I'm afraid my wife and kids will start complaining about my absense

Good thing is I can do some modeling in the livingroom so at least they'll hear a scarse hmmhmm once in a while.

Next to working on this model I'm working on another model on the computer.

There's just one Imperial Star Destroyer I could find and although it's a nice model, there could be made some improvements.
I'm overhauling the entire model right now making it double the scale and with lots of detail.
It's a lot of work but I try to make it this way that it can be published, not just a one of a kind.
When it's finished I'll contact the original creator first though to ask permision to give it out.

When there's some progress on the ISD I'll post some pictures too.

@dnalor
Of corse it's Star Wars, what else is there ?
Nah just kidding.
Star Wars is my favourite but I like a lot of sci-fi.

Again thank you all for your kind words, I'm just a beginner in papercrafting and still need a lot to learn.

Cheers,
Elko

Be careful, papercrafting is addictive!

She looks fantastic so far. Thank you for sharing. The only advice I would add is, print extra part pictures and overlay/greeble detail into the hull. It really adds character into a model and keeps the hull from looking flat. It can also help cover some fold lines.

Do you do some computer modeling too? Then, my friend, you're years ahead of me!:thumb: I'm just a regular newbie builder, but I think I'll have to learn how to model and unfold it.
Your model is looking great, go for it, and keep us posted. And if you want, in the end, share it with us all!
Cheers!

P.S. Revell-Fan said it all: papercrafting is HIGHLY addictive!

Dude,
Your work is really clean and precise, it looks great! Not only is this a great hobby, but you are in a fantastic community of people who are kind, honest and very generous. You're going to have a great experience here.
Best wishes,
Mike

Me too...i have a treasure usb stick with all the great models. also non star wars..
But i still find better star wars models i really want to build.
and that drops back my timeline of building all those models.
How it looks now i'm building untill august with the models i work on at the moment.
So becareful...it's more addictive then a sigarett :)

@Rogerio Silva
No I'm not into 3d computer modeling.
I used to work as an architect for underground infrastructures, I've made lots and lots of schematics of structures in 2D (The old fashion way on paper). These drawings were then scanned and found their way to the 3D people who made a model out of these plans.

I'm overhauling the ISD in 2D using Paint Shop Pro and allready folded out so to speak.
It would propably be easier to do it in a 3d design application but I haven't got the time or will to learn a whole new method of modeling.
This might take a bit more time but having to learn a new programm before I can make what I want isn't to appealing to me.
If in doubt about my drawing I can directly print it out and see how it folds

@F131

I do use multiple copies and different weights of paper for adding detail and such (greeble  not a term I'm familiar with, but I'll use that instead).

@dnalor
I know what you mean, I've allready downloaded more models than I will possibly build, it's just nice to have them so you can choose what model to build next. They're all so darn fantastic :-o

Thanks for all the possitive replies. I've been a member of another (plastic) modeling forum a while back (not anymore) but all you ever heard was unconstructive criticts and slander, jealousy and competitive behaviour.

This is a great hobby and I for one still need to learn a lot, respect towards the veterans and leniency towards noobs like me get's us as enthousiasts a long way imho.

PS

I'm working on the superstructure of the ISD now and I'm wondering is there a limit in how many A4 sheets one should use to make it accessible for others ?
I upscaled the model to 190% of the original, now I can manage to devide the main hull sides (top and bottom) over four A4 size sheets per side.
The length of the ship will be appr. 50cm when finished.

The structures, bays and engines will take up at least another four sheets I think, making it a total of twelve sheets, and that's without the extra detail (greeble) options.

I'm wondering if that's to much. Most models I downloaded are between 4 and 7 A4 sheets.

Thanks for your time,

Cheers,
Elko

I like big models :)
And i don't think that it would be a problem..
but the greeble extra's, i would print them as an extra..
so you can build the basic and update him with the extra details.
I think that would be a winner..

The 2 domes on top will they become real domes or just 2 flat rounds?
Come on..give a teaser pic:)

I'll see if I can keep the basic model at no more then twelve A4 sheets.
The greeble sheets, hmm if I make lots of detail you get lots of sheets, we'll see how things go when I make my testbuild.

The 2 domes from the original have to go. I'm trying to make things so even less experienced crafters can make it (like me).
I came up with two basic shapes that I can use for the shield deflectors (domes on top)

These two shapes that aren't to hard to fold and still could resemble a dome sphere kinda thingy.

Pic one is the 1st basic shape.
Pic two is where I'm trying to make it look a bit more dome shaped

Pic three is more to my tase but in the scale I'm working, things get real small real fast.

I'm gonna post more pics when the testbuild starts. Maybe better to start a new topic for that.

First I'm gonna finish building my Republican SD. When I can't use my hands for modeling (don't ask, some anoying illness) I'll be working on the ISD overhaul on the computer.

BTW dnalor, Ive been looking at your builds.....ugh those are absolutely stunning. I can't even dream of becoming That good.

Either way, dude, you're light-years ahead of me! I am just a plain newbie builder, and not a very talented one, although I always try to overcome my limitations.
All the best!

Excellent start ShadowHawk, definitely better than when I first started. Looking forward to seeing what joys you will bring to the table :)

Thanks guys for the compliments.

I wanted to make some pictures of the Venator's progress but I have to charge my camera's batteries first.
I added the bulkheads on the lower half and started to greeble the upper half.
The lower half became a bit twisted when the hangars and bulkheads were in place but I managed to twist it back.
I think it's gonna need some struts to reduce some of the tension on the lower hull.

I hope to post some pics tomorow.

Man I love this hobby

Cheers,
Elko

Hey, ShadowHawk, please keep us posted!:thumb:

I will

I've just ad a couple very busy days and the only thing I had little time for was checking the forums and doing some browsing on the internet for nice models :)

At least I got my camera back in order, seemed the batteries didn't charge anymore so I had to get me some new ones.

The little building I did was putting the superstructure from the Venator together and messed up, so I had to print a new sheet (if this would have been plastic I would have had to buy a whole new kit!!).
My second attempt is on the way. If I have time I'll take some pictures and post them, no promisses though, my wife has had a small surgical treatment (nothing serious) so I'm taking care of the kids a bit more.

Regarding the ISD, things are comming allong but still far from a first testbuild, it's a lot of work, and I got a another project that I took over from someone on another forum. He started a model but didn't realy get around finishing it, I askedhim about it and he was so kind to let me have a shot at it, that project has allready had a first testbuild and is comming along nicely, when I think it's presentable I'l show some pictures of it, and no I'm not going to say what it is yet, that's a surprise

Cheers and al the best,
Elko

Well here are my progress pictures of the Republic Star Destroyer.
I'm working on the superstructures (for the 2nd time) and they're working out better then the first time, but that's for the next update.

And here is a little teaser of what I'm working on (my secret project )

These are pics taken before the first testbuild, so no textures etc.
Can anyone guess what it's gonna be ?
