Halo Spartan WIP

Would you believe this was started on a whim two days ago?
I've put my Helghast on the backburner for this, a hobby show is coming up in the near future and my armour group is going to be there. Decided I may as well have something new.
The armour is loosely based around the Mjolnir MKIII from Halo Reach, the helmet being a conceptual helmet from it. Work vacation ends on Monday, so I'm powering through as much as reasonably possible now.

Whoa, nice! I've always been meaning to make my own MJOLNIR armor, but I've never had the time, materials, or simply the raw ability for it. But yours looks great so far; it's a nice clean build, and it seems to fit well on your person. I can't wait to see more.

Thanks! If you ever decide to try, the 405th is an amazingly useful resource. Before I forget, that was my source for all the pep files, they have absolutely everything you could want and some amazing talent :)

Today will be devoted to arms, if there's time I'll be hitting the legs. Seems myself and a few friends all had the Spartan idea at the same time, so we're group ordering some hardening agents so we can all do it together.

Cheers! Yeah, the 405th is a godsend when it comes to this stuff.
Sadly I made three different vambraces yesterday and they were either just... off, or too small, so I got almost nothing done.
Latest vambrace is here, but it was the wrong shape to add a GPS to and just doesn't look right with the armour-

So I gave it to a friend who's making his own set.

A couple of questions...

First of all, NICE JOB!!:thumb::thumb:
But I would like to know a few things: are you using...
1 - A4 format paper?
2 - 180g paper (means 1 square-meter of paper weighs 180g, a thin cardstock);
3 - simple white glue or (my favorite) styrofoam glue?

I intend to build armors like that for my kids; I think HALO would be easier than Iron Man, do you agree?
I am sorry for so many questions, but I am a newbie here, and if I can get advice from more skilled people, that would be just great!
Thanks!

I'm unsure about Halo being simpler... In my opinion, I think Iron Man would be thanks to online resources and panelling. There's more guides, templates and reference pictures (though not much more)- a great site for anything Iron Man costume related is therpf.com, half their threads are Iron Man builds. :)
Iron Man would cover more, but Halo seems more.. three dimensional. I think they'd both be similar levels of difficulty. In my opinion, Halo armour also needs a good undersuit or it looks bad- tights alone rarely cut it, an undersuit either needs to be patterned or bought for full effect. Iron Man covers more of the body.

I'm using 65lb A4 sized cardstock bought at Walmart in packs of 100. :)
Should be using 110lb, but I don't have the money to do that. If I did, definitely. I use a gluegun for speed, it's messier but I clean it afterwards and correct mistakes with a heat gun.

Good luck! Any questions and I'll be glad to answer.
I'm doing inside padding with EVA foam (
pk%204%20EVA%20Foam%20Floor%20Mats%2024.95%209.95.jpg
), as well as the vented panels inside the thigh due to its flexibility.

On the chest, I'm using a MOLLE chest rig to both add pouches and attach bits of free floating armour.

Left vambrace will have a spot for an iPhone so it can be used Pip-Boy style, most likely interfaced with a few friends via a tracker.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply, it was really insightful. But I'm still working out on what 65lb paper means. You know, we use the metric system, so i'll just look over the internet. Don't worry, I'll find it.
Thanks again!

Another name for 110lb paper is Cardstock. I would have to say that doing costumes from HALO would be easier than IronMan for your kids. I did 2 costumes for my son for Halloween one was the Master Chief and then a few years later I did the ODST Trooper for him. The HALO armor is more flat sided which makes it easier to properly fiberglass and cover the pieces with Bondo. The costumes I did for my son were in no way perfect but he loved them and everybody knew who he was and he only wore them for one night. The level of detail you put into them is based on your skill level, resources and time!

Rogerio, try your local stationary store. I don't know if you have Staples or Walmart there, but it should be in the printer paper section. Just try the heaviest printer-safe stuff they have. :)
Any pictures of the builds, dkaniel? Still mulling through ideas.

I did take one picture of him in his Master Chief costume but I think its lost when the memory card in my digital camera went missing! I did a low poly version of the costume for him and then just covered it with a coat of resin before I painted it. The whole using fiberglass cloth and bondo was still a new thing to me and I was in time crunch to get the costume done. He told me he wanted to be Master Chief only 3 weeks before Halloween so I had to cut some corners!

Holy hell, 3 weeks is really quite fast. Did you make the model yourself?
I've been doing all high-poly and am sort of regretting it, but this is the sort of thing I want to keep... well, forever. So @ Rogeria, I think the difficulty of the outfit depends on the build you do- high poly has a lot of little pits and details in either costume.

I did some shopping today to get ready for the impending storm-

Thanks, PreacherMan!

My problem was just how to figure out the unit for the paper thickness. You guys use lb, and it depends on the kind of paper, we use gsm for any. I have found a conversion table, and things are now much easier.
Greetings from Brazil!

No I didn't make the model files...I downloaded the low poly versions from a site that was started by some members from the 405th. I don't think the site that had the files is still up. I haven't visited the 405th in a long time, so maybe the files might be available there.
