My Hellboy Samaritan Build

Just discovered this site while working on my current build and wanted to share it here. It is the samaritan pistol from Hellboy created by UHU02. I normally like to build my models from scratch but UHU02 model is excellent and only needed minor tweeks so I decided to use it as the base. Thanks to UHU02 for making it.

The first thing I did was print everything out on the 110pd cardstock. I am going to paint it later so grayscale and lowquality is fine. I started with the handle. This will be the hardest part of the build. I cut out and assembled the handle making sure to cut out the emblem in the center. I dont use tabs as they create a staircase-like surface. Instead i use small squares on the backside to keep everything flush. After assembling both halves I glued them together:

Next I coated the handle in wall spackle and let it dry.

Saldy I dont have many pictures between the next step because I was trying out a new process. Basically I sanded the handle down and then sprayed with a a Primer and Filler car paint. Once dried I sanded again. This left some cracks but I thought they would add to the wood grain look. Once it was smooth I primed it white. The wood grain process consisted of two shades of brown acrylic paint. First a light brown. I dipped a frayed paint brush in the paint and then in water. As I applied it i used long straight strokes. You dont want the paint to be consistent. Instead you want the frayed edges to leave streaks. as the acrylic paint dries it will be easier to do this. It may look bad at first but once you are done repeat the process with the darker brown making sure to water down a little first. The result should look like this:

Next I cut small cirlces and drew the hand emblem on them. I etched over the lines with a metal mechanical pencil tip to give the lines depth:

I cut a circle the size of the base of the handle and glued a 4mm strip to the edge. I cut a slit in this and attached a metal ring with a folded rectangle of paper. This wil serve as the butt plate:

Next I painted the emblems, screws, and butt plate silver. Once dry I quickly brushed on lightly watered down black paint and rubbed it off. This gets the paint in the recesses and makes the silver look more real. I then glued everything together. The "screws" were made using the holes from a hole punch and cutting the plus shape into them:

The etched lines on the emblem were not dark enough so I used a dark grey watercolor marker to add color.

actually already have a bit more to show. I had to split the post due to attachment restrictions.

I started by cutting out the two read side panels and cutting out a screw inlay for where the gun hinges. I then asembled the majority of the rear part of the gun exactly as the kit has them. This got me to the following point:

Next I had to create the hammer. The one in the kit was only one thickness which was incorrect. Luckily the overall shape was good so i used the kit to create the curved portion at the bottom of the hammer and the used the basic shape to create the thiner top part. I also used some plastic putty to create the rounded edges along the edges. Lastly I cut little strips and glued them to the thumb part of the hammer to give it the ridges it's supposed to have (not shown below).

The gun release lever was curved correctly but the part that faces the veiwer was just a tapered v shape and the actual prop had a stepped design which I cut out to replace the one provided. The thumb part of the lever was also incorrect so I just scratch built one. It consited of three layers for the top. One I used a screwdriver to make small holes in and one was just an outer ridge. I glued the three together to make the top. The other two were used on the backside. I put a small trim around the edges to make it look solid:

Here is the completed back part of the gun. I will do painting and assembly once everything is complete:

Next I worked on the cylinder which again was pretty accurate. The major problem was the rear facing part where you load the ammo was missing all the fine details such as the L shapes around the center and the circles on the outside edges. I cut these out and glued a backing to it. I also added a small fake screw head to the center:

I also cut the T shapes into the outside wall of the cylinder. You can kind of see them in the folloiwng photo:

Well thats all for now I will hopefully have another update later this week as I am already a good way through the front portion of the gun.

I now have most of the gun constructed. I finished the front portion of the gun. Again most of the model was accurate, so I just needed to add fine details and make a few small corecttions. The first thing I did was add some screws to the side of the gun. I later realized the screw on the far left was wrong and have since corrected it. I also added a small notch to the rear of the curved part where the barrel meets the frame. Have not seen this on all version but it's definately in the screencaps I have so I decided to include it:
attachment.php

The next thing I changed was The base of the lower cylander had a bottle cap looking shape so I wrapped some cardstock around it until it was the right thickness and sanded the edges to the correct bevel. I then used a mechanical pencil to etch in the lines. You can also see I added a small strip underneath the barrel just like the prop:
attachment.php

While the top Barrel shroud was pretty acurate it felt very flimsy and I did not think it would hold up to paint so I laminated(glued together) several sheets of cardstock to make the top rectangle and then glued the side bars onto that:
attachment.php

Next I decided to redo the sight. Sadly I could not find any great shots of them in my reference folder so I just did the best I could with the angles I had:

I used a dowel rod for the cylinder rod because I did not trust it not to bend. You can't see the dowel rod in the picture below but this is where the model sits now. It should be complete minus the shells which I still need to make:

When you can get a picture that close to a model, and it looks that good, you know you've done something right!! :)

Got some time to paint the gun this weekend. Basically I painted the whole body black and then dry brushed on alot of silver. Once I did that I brushed some watered down black to help blend the silver back into the black. Finally I used a silver paint marker to draw on the worn edges. The bullets I painted brass with gunmetal tips and then gave them a blackwash. I am pretty happy with how it turned out:
