Jedi ETA-2 by Paper-Replika

The mission: Scale Paper-Replika's Jedi ETA-2 up 157% and build with interior by Tomasz Bąk also available on Paper-Replika.com. Construct with opening clear canopy, and possibly hinged wing flaps. Create a recessed port for R2D2. Make sturdy enough to be played with by a 4 year old.

Finish by said (almost) 4 year old's 4th birthday on May 14th.

I had originally planned to scale up the Republic Attack Gunship, but seeing that it would be between 3 and 4 feet in length when properly scaled up, I realized that I had nowhere near enough time. So that will have to be longer term, maybe Christmas.

So I scaled the templates up, and had to rearrange them and modify pieces to fit on the 8.5x11" stock that I have. I'll be using 65# card stock with 1mm matte board or 3mm Sintra (a PVC foam board) depending on how much reinforcement is needed in each given area.

I will upload some pics as soon as I get them off the camera.

First set of pics ... nothing much, just the resized, reorganized and crammed together pieces.

The complete enlarged model on top, and the almost stock printout on bottom (Ok, printed at 94% to fit 8.5x11). And yes, I will be building both scales, one for him,and one for me. :mrgreen:

Not to play devil`s advocate or anything, but you know the eta2 is available from TRU for like $25, right I`m doing something similar and working on an ISD for a 7 year old birthday on the 8th of May, myself. I`m thinking maybe brush-on resin, as if you were going to do a large pep-armor, but without the step where you lay in FG matting. I`m trying something similar for components of uhu02`s greedo killer I`m using to mod a metal C96 I`ve got. Problem might be that just resin may be too brittle for a 4 year old.

I need one of you smart folks to explain how to increase model scale. I would love to re-build ARC-170, but to at least twice the size of the original (which is pretty small).

I use Photoshop because when you double up the sizes, you have to rearrange the parts.

You want the ARC 170, I'd have to look at that file to see.

As for resizing, you can always go to your local Kinko's, or staple's (or any other print shop), and ask them to resize the file and print it out on what ever paper you want it on.

I use Photoshop for enlarging as well. The ARC-170 is also on my "to do" list.

Very cool! Are you going for 1:20 or 1:18? I scaled up the interior and modified it for my 1:18 Thunderfighter build. I am interested to see how you will build the droid socket. I will be watching this!

@ Szdfan- I'm using PVC foam board (not foamcore), the PVC is used for making outdoor signs. It is a lightweight sturdy plastic.
@Inv8r_timmy- But if I purchased it, I couldn't say that I made it. :mrgreen: Plus, there is a lot more love involved in something that was made and not just purchased.
@ASC Mclaren- I figure it to be about 1/18. I used the R2 unit width as my barometer/measuring stick. Once I got the width correct, that was the scale.

Progress time!

Cockpit/hull base cut out and edged painted with 10x0 brush. These watercolors represent the best $3 spent on paper modeling

The Sintra base. Not as clean as I had hoped . . . plus a bit of skin left behind courtesy of Mr. CA Glue.

Well, not as clean as I had hoped. Some issues with the Sintra base, but not too objectionable, at least not so that a 4 year old would get upset about it.

Apparently R2 is -VERY- protective about Anakin's ETA-2.

That's it for now, hopefully I'll get some decent progress tomorrow.

Forgot to get pics yesterday, so took pics of the past two days' work. Getting some progress in the cockpits, I may just go with mostly 2 layers laminated matte board plus the card. The large cockpit floor and rear bulkhead were done this way and it is THICK and sturdy. So far the builds are not as clean as I would have liked, but I don't think that will be detrimental to the overall pieces as they are meant to look extensively used in battle.

Floor of cockpit. You might notice some degradation in the color saturation between the smaller and larger pieces. This is due to having to convert all to jpegs then edit in Photoshop, then print. Next time I'll try to convert to PNGs.

BTW- the rear bulkhead is not attached as yet, they are just leaning up against each other.

It's hard to tell, but the little red dots are about 1 mm in diameter on the smaller model.

@ Rhaven Blaack- Thanks, the detail is from the cockpit on Paper-replika.com Looking at some of the specifics, I'm not sure that the model in the pics is actually from the templates presented. But it sure is nice having cockpit details!

@dnalor- Wait . . . . didn't you just finish a Falcon with lots of small fiddlin' details? And you are currently building a big ol' X-wing?sign1

I think it looks great!! I wish,and there may be, by just asking, a way to distribute the model at these larger sizes. It could save others time ad allow those who do not know how to do this the opportunity to build it.
