Hello all I was wondering if anyone has ever built just the nose section for display . My grandfather flew B-17 in the war he has past but I was thinking about building the nose section with his nose art on it for my mother . Maybe put it on a wall hanging of some type . I am really thinking about using the patterns from the GPM one to make it out of alum sheet . . Let me know what you have or think Thanks !!! And if anyone is interested I have pics from my grandfathers scrap book to work off of :thumb:

The nose of the B-17 differs according to the model. Practically all noses from the C-D-E-F and G models of the Fortress have slight or major differences between them.

It would be useful to know exactly which model your father flew.

I have never seen just the nose section assembled, but it would be a nice project, specially if it is enlarged to 1:16 or somethings similar (or even larger). The GPM must be scale 1:33, which may be a bit small for displaying only the nose.

I helped a designer with a B-17 nose recently. If you can find the EXACT model your Grandfather flew, post it, we'll see. :)

I have read alot on the B-17 and actually flew in a G model at the EAA with my grandfather when he was still alive . So I know it is a late model G .The GPM one I found will work exactly for what I need. So any help would be great .

Post pictures of your build. That would be the best way to get help. If you just want the nose, you could probably scale it up, depending on the quality of the model you have. :)

Ok Awesome I will do that once I get going on this project . I am hoping the scale up works the best I will build out of paper first then try alum . I was also wondering if anyone has any advise or help in what is the best way to make the clear parts ? Articles or any help would be great :)

Iremenber seeing the movie years ago great job

Supermax, where have you been?

You can see the whole movie on Youtube now. It's easier to download all the separate parts, but still a great movie. To the first person that makes a crack about Joan Baez, you had to have been there to understand. She means what she sings about.

Please don't be a stranger. You can just look at what others do and comment. If you are still making models, post them. It's your company we'd like to have! :)

I had the privilege of meeting Peter and Mary many times, when I lived in Ridgefield Ct. Mary was an absolute sweetheart of a person. My wife did a lot of gardening for her. That was a time of great awakening. It is time to awaken again, as it seems the same kinds of people are trying to do it all over again. They hide behind religious names, and behind flags, of many countries. :curse:

I have thought about doing this before with the B-17 and the B-24. I got to looking at them and noticed the nose section was short so was going to build it with part of the wings showing too. I think they would make great plaques.

I have also thought about this, especially with Niebla de Fuegos', (Ruben Andres) re-drawing of the ZORN DC-3, the one that is the nose, and part of the wing. I thought that a 3/4 view would allow more of the model, and include a full wing. I also thought that a full 1/2 half model, tilted so that the plane was in a left turn (ref. nose on left hand side), would allow the full wing, the top of the plane, the rudder, and elevator. If it was turned a little bit Yaw axis), you could have a full nose piece, which would quickly start to diminish. Kind of a half model that someone pulled out of the wall, or frame it was in. Does that make sense? :)

I understand very well what you mean. A display like that would be incredibly more "dynamic". And more interesting. I would love to see that!

Just a small correction: the designer of the DC-3 is Mr. Alan Rose. Mr. Zorn is the designer of the Ford Tri-Motor ;)

Thank You for correcting me on that. I believe I may be having "Senior Moments". :)

Do you by any chance have his B-17 aircraft serial number? That might help with figuring out the layout of the nose as often it would change from Boeing, Vega, Lockheed, and who ever else was doing contract work for Boeing.

Also have you considered building the external frame in balsa, using a larger scale kit and then scratch building the internal components in paper? I don't know how pure paper you want to keep this so it may not be an option.

I'd can't wait to see how this comes out for you.
