Large scale Imperial Warships

Hey there!

I've admired the models from the X-wing Alliance Upgrade project for a long time, and for almost an equal amount of time I've wanted to turn them into paper models. Now, thanks to Blaar, I have the raw models at my disposal! While I was at it, I figured, why not create a scale fleet of them?

I needed to scale them to the largest model, the Imperial II Star Destroyer, because that would ensure they'd fit on Letter-size paper (you guys across the pond will be able to print your ships bigger than us, so it's a plus factor for you that I am using Letter size paper).

Since I am scaling the fleet to the Imperial Star Destroyer, I decided to start with it. There are some problems with the raw model. For one thing, apart from the fact that the tractor beam targetting array is flat, theres zero difference between this model and the ISD1 model, so that had to be fixed. I can't texture worth a darn, so I couldn't make new turrets, or any other new parts for that matter, but I could delete the big side turrets in the trench notches as well as the flaps around the engines. I also stretched the hull so it's proportions would match the ISD2 from The Empire Strikes Back. The textures do match the first version of the ship, but the new look will better distinguish it from the old one.

I've scaled the model to 1:2700, the maximum size, which translates to 60 centimeters, or 23.6 inches. Should be a good size for a shelf unit.

Here's a picture of the development:

Here are the other ships on the list:

The corvette will be the smallest model, and will translate to about 2.1 inches. Sounds small, but if I leave off the fiddly bits like the laser cannons, or else replace them with a flat piece, it will be buildable. At least you can skip them if you can't build that small, or else get the free version of Pepakura Designer and upsize it to your preferred dimensions.

If this project lasts long enough, I might be willing to do the Rebel ships.

Nuts. Still no SSD. :p

At that scale mate, it'd be 6 meters long (or more). I know my wife would kibosh any attempt I made at something that bloody big.

I totally want one of those strike cruisers. Ever since playing WEG Star wars I've wanted one.

Milleniumfalsehood, you mentioned sharing? :D

I have been looking for a good large scale Victory I Star Destroyer. I really like these.

Thanks guys!

I've got the Victory I Star Destroyer done. I would have gotten the ImpStarI first, but I kept getting deja' vu and burning out because, well, I'd done all that before. The VSD II will be easier, because it's significantly different from the VSDI.

There are a few intersections in these models, by the way, such as the secondary engines, but since they're easily trimmed to fit I'm not going to buy the full version of Meta just for that. I might have to if I ever get to the starfighters, though. On nearly all of them there's something that intersects which is crucial to the look of the ship.

Anyway, here's a picture of the finished development:

Finished size is about 33.3 cm/13.1 in long. Plenty big, IMO. :thumb:

I probably should go ahead and finish the other Imperial Star Destroyer before I continue, though. If I don't get it done now it may never get done, and being a completist, I'd never get around to releasing it if I didn't.

I've got good news and bad news.

Good news is that I've got three more Star Destroyers added to the list: the Venator, the Acclamator, and the Rand Ecliptic.

The bad news: I've got finals coming up, and I need to spend as much time as I can studying, so I won't be unfolding anything else for next week or two.

Waiting patiently as I get on my own daughters case to get studying.
Any chance you might unfold the updated Blockade Runner? A personal favorite of mine since I was 10.

Thanks, guys!

@F131: I'm definitely going to unfold it. :thumb: *When* I unfold it is another story, though. I'll probably be next to last, by virtue of it's position on the list.

Just a quick note: Monday and Tuesday are finals, then I can get back to work making this fleet. :thumb:

I am really looking forward to having a giant Imperial Star Destroyer model, not to mention a flotilla of Imperial starships which I can use to show the size difference between the various Star Wars ships.

It's finals week! Today I did my Physics final. My teacher was kind: he only had us do the last few chapters as opposed to a comprehensive final. Not surprising, since he told us at the beginning of the year that because the last few chapters will be based off of things we already knew, we should already know the previous material anyway.

Next up is my Calculus 3 final. This one *is* comprehensive, but since Calc 3 is based off of variations on a theme (mainly just different ways to slice a pie, that is, the integral), it's not going to be that difficult.

Finally, no pun intended, my music final will be on Wednesday, and that will be the last one. It's choir, so all I have to do is sing. No problem.

When that's done, I'll be free and clear to start in again on these unfolds. I'm looking for a Christmas release. :thumb:

Choir music Final! That sure brings back memories. You get nervous and your voice goes up an octave! We used to have to perform outside concerts, in Winter, in Connecticut! It sounded like the whole Choir developed a vibrato! I would pile up so much clothes under that robe, I could camp in it. All I needed was a stick to convert the robe into a tent! I used to love singing Handel's Messiah. I had to switch tween Tenor and Bass. Based on who didn't show up. Lots of fun. Choir was loaded with chicks too, which made it even more fun.
