Robotech SDF-1 (Battle Fortress or Cruiser)

Im getting ready to start the SDF-1 from Robotech, and can't decide if I want to build the Battle Fortress or the Cruiser version. The download allows me to build either, but not both without reprinting it, and I don't have the $ to reprint it out right now. Eventually I will, but for now, Im not sure which one I want to start with. What do you guys think I should do first. I have it printed and ready to go.

This is the (High Detail) SDF-1 from Thunderchild Papermechs

The Spaceship. It's only because to me, these things transforming into a standing dude makes no sense, but as a space ship it looks cool! :)

Hey, I printed that out too just two days ago and I scaled to fit on 13" x19", going to be big. I'll build the ship mod first then the transformed version. Being a big time Macross fan, embarrassing that I have not build any Macross stuff yet. But, in couple weeks I will.

I printed mine on 11x17

Whichever you decide on, I cant wait to see the build! :D
Watch those beveled edges. They're a pain to build but the end result is really nice.

Thankfully, I have time to decide. Most of the parts can be assembled individually, then put together once I decide what configuration i want.

Still undecided though

you could glue magnets in key assembly areas and have it sort of transformable.

I was thinking of that as the only option for the legs when I eventually get around to continuing work on Version 3 of the SDF. I have all the other areas of transformation sorted but the legs are a pain because they detach from the shoulders and reattach to the hips during transformation.

On a side note, if you're still undecided DR, all the builds I see of this model is in Storm-attacker mode, so if you do the cruiser, it'll be the first.

Its a ROBOTECH thing!

The real question is whether a msic box will start singing "we will win" when its unfolded...

Great work,

LMAO! I almost fell out of my chair reading that. Funny thing is that im sure I could find one of those little musical cards, and rerecord The Robotech saga theme into it, and they are small enough that it would easily fit inside the model. just a thought :)

The music/sound box sounds good. There are little sound chips that will do the same thing and you can record whatever you want too. You could record things like, "Put this model down or you die", or something mean. These are only around $8.00 a pop (when you add up the speaker and wiring). These are about 34 x 23 x 11 mm in size. They can record 20 seconds, or longer with a lower sampling rate.

Man, I've been wanting to start this project for a long time. Only thing is that I want to make a really large model of the SDF1 from the original Robotech series. I need to get the dimensions though so I can get the correct proportions for the thing.

Yea, me too! I would love to do one in transformed version around 7'~8'. Think I would have to add a ton of support to hold it up too. But I just don't have time for that. I already got too many stuff waiting to get done. So, I just going to watch you

i am getting a wide format printer for Christmas and an upscale of this is one of my first projects planned for it :)

Still undecided, But i've been making the seperate components (Up until i HAVE to decide) Btw Thunderchild, you are correct about those beveled edges. They are a nightmare wall1

Progress so far

Still haven't decided if this is the Mech build or the Ship build

I wasn't happy with the colors, so I "blued" up the Blue. Now it looks like it did to me as a kid :)
