Small Model Dilemma

I lack the fancy computer tools that many of you have to build your models so I have to do 99% of my models purely by hand.

That being said I have tried at card modeling 3D card model infantry, not 2D or that 2.5D, fully 3D for wargaming.

Building vehicles is pretty easy but something considered more organic such as creatures and personnel it is enough to drive me insane because it is a little difficult to mold paper into intricate details. wall1

So has anyone had this problem and are there any solutions?

If you look for the work by a member named Valmy, you will see some incredible, Imean really incredible, figures he makes. another member Tirick, also does the same thing. I agree, Organic shapes are Hard. Pepekura Designer is not expensive at all and some people are quite excellent with it. There are many models of characters made with it. MTK is another person whose work is amazing.

Valmy's work is very impressive indeed and I like his methods in model construction. A lot more refined than my own to say the least.

Tirick's work is an awesome combination of high tech and conventional designs.

Yeah I think I have my work cut out for me in the quality department.

You may want to check out Google Sketchup. It is FREE! You will find many here who use it and you can product incredible , and I mean incredible, models with it. There is a large community of people and many tutorials on it. If you put in the time, you will be up to speed very quick.

I'll give it a try.

It'll be a little strange using that instead of making things by hand from all these years. It's like going from manual transmission to automatic. You reach out for that gear shift and it ain't there and stomp on the floor board looking for that clutch. (Yes I'm guilty of that. I miss my jeep...)

Here's something to chew on.

I am trying to make fully 3 dimensional troops in a 28-30mm scale, fully detailed and using only paper and cardstock. Has anyone attempted this before?

It's all been attempted. You could try this. Imagine a head made out of plat-doh. You slice the head in equal slices, from the top down. Now, you have little slices that stack up into a head. See what I mean?

Yes that is the similar process but on this small of scale.

This isn't some 1:24th scale thing going on this is like tiny...like Warhammer small.

If this has been attempted I like to see proof. Google isn't giving me crap.

Thing about doing it old school by hand is that is REAL art/craft, IMP. Paper kits I bought when I was 7~9 yrs old back in Hong Kong from some book stores are all old school. They are printed, but originals are old school. Every now and then, I will recall how much fun it was building them. Doing old school take real skill. Not that I am going to try do old school anytime soon, actually, never. But that doing by hand made you a craftsman or artist, whichever you like to be address as.

God gave me steady hands so I tend to keep them in use because what you don't use you lose.

I'm a staunch supporter of traditional methods and I'll just say this that I find it almost theraputic that I can carve and shape things with my own hands.

However it does get frustrating at times, but not too often. No, no, no. wall1
