Space Battleship Yamato

I imported that Mesh into Rhino, other than seeing it, you would literally have to trace every single line to make something out of it. AArrgh! If I was going to go through all that trouble, I'd just make that model. The surfaces are ridiculously formed. I see a major problem with the way sketchup forms it's models. I also know why so many people in CAD stay away from them.

Well I see two small problems with that...
1) It's out of stock
2) If it were in stock I need a job funny thing is you would like to order it but they insist that you give them money, kinda ruins it for me...

That's what I did for the Earthsea Dragon.

That's very interesting. The problem is, are those files released to the general public or not?

I think Pep would work. as far as skins go, Im working on getting the textures needed for completion. gimmie about a week, and i'll have all the material you'll need to skin the awesome mother of a Ship. :D im so looking forward to FINALLY putting together this mamma jammer!

The problem I am having with every model I see from SketchUp is the same. If I can import it, I have to duplicate every single line, then create a surface, or there is nowhere to place a texture. I think Models made completely in SketchUp, )and some of them are incredible) must be using the points as a reference and a separate part made for each side of the texture. Maybe the reference points are the plane for the textures also, in any case, I have to use the Duplicate Edge" command to each line, the try and make a surface that will unfold. It is really like working off of a blueprint and making the model from scratch, albeit, a 3D blueprint.

I have downloaded the model and converted it into both MQO en 3DS files. Maybe it will be easier to work with instead of the SKP file.

Um, did you guys miss this post by blaar? He had it already converted to MQO. I opened it, adjusted the paths to the textures and it looks perfect. I'm using the current version of Meta (registered).

And by the way, there is a free OBJ export plugin available for Sketchup that generally works fairly well, although it didn't work with this particular model. Don't recall where I found it at the moment, but for future reference ya know.

This ship is on my to-do-someday list, so if you guys get it done that will save me a lot of work. :)

Ah, the Yamato. She holds a place of honor in my bar. I found her on ebay about 10 years ago. It's not the most detailed plastic model I ever built but I feel she displays well. Thanks for the youtube mention on the 2010 movie. It was pretty good. It sure would have made a solid BSG type TV series.

Excited!

You guys are getting me all excited. I never saw the show when it was on, and I've tried watching some of the (dubbed) episodes, but it's so bad I can't stand it. However, the ship is just the absolute coolest spaceship ever and is on my must have list. Just seeing this thread and talking about it makes me want to jump on it.

Rick, please make this kit so I don't have to.

So I figured out why importing this model means having to trace every single line.

Its because the original author had set the entire thing as one object in Sketchup, instead of leaving it as it was originally. THAT's why you have to reproduce every line instead of using the exsisting mesh. the Mesh was taken out

I wonder if we could somehow get ahold of the designer, and ask him for a copy of the original file if he would share?

What programs(s) are you working on it with? Most 3D programs allow you to split an object into multiple objects. I do it all the time with Meta. Not sure about how to do it in Sketchup, but I know it supports grouping geometries into a larger unit.
