SR2 ship.

SJSquirrel, I'm glad to see you taking a shot at the SR2 model. I built your first one and it was excellent. F131's rendition looks great.

...

I'm really looking forward to this one. I may attempt to build it to scale with your SR1 model...though it is supposed to be close to twice the size in the game...

Glad you liked the original. The SR2 mesh I'm working from has some good detail and would scale up nicely. My plan is to design it with enough internal support that it can be made larger fairly easily and if there is enough interest I'll do it ib a larger size.

If anyone has else has a preference for a finished size now's the time to let me know. Right now I'm just going with (roughly) the same as the SR1 kit - about 18 inches finished length.

I think the front engine tips do move to steer the ship with mass effect fields. The rear engine bits move as well. Below is a screen I hope helps.

Hmmmm, hard to tell from that screen shot. Everything looks pretty straight. Good shot of what the engine glow looks like though.

Speaking of the game, both ME1 and 2 are available on the PC (as long as you have a video card from the last couple of years) and are well worth playing.

Excellent! Thanks for that info. I do have access to a PC with a good recent graphics card - I upgraded it last year for another game (Burnout Paradise). I'll have to look into getting these as finances permit.

Stay tuned.

Purchase them on the Steam Network. Their prices are decent. Both games play very well on modest machines with at least a dual core processor. I have a 2 year old Macbook pro and they play perfect with the max settings.
BTW, I would be all over a larger scale SR-2.

She is finally done! Thanks to everyone for their support. I am still new to paper modeling. I'm still not sold on my stand. Something with clear plastic/acrylic might be nice.
A couple of tips I found useful:
-Black Sharpie markers and waterproof paint cover cutlines and glue marks nicely.
-I have big hands, so a fondu stick sanded down worked great for the engine/wing hinge, and I cut the end off a paint brush for the dome piece on top of the rear antenna.
-Multiple coats of High Gloss poly spray gave the hull a more even (metal?) feel.

I did biff on the Mako hatch on the lower hull. I cut cut it out wrong and repaired it the best I could.

I did look at the current SR-2 parts...and it's intimidating. I'm not certain where I would start. I'm looking forward to seeing what Steve is coming up with.

Thanks to everyone who creates these models for us to build. I wish I had that that skill to do 3d modeling.

Looks good

F131,

She looks great! So good I may have to build one myself. I think when I get the SR2 kit done I'll build both. Right now I'm on a handgun gun kick, and have finally finished my SR-71 I was making.

As always, so many models, so little time....

Still progressing on the SR2 mesh cleanup and development. No pictures worth posting yet but soon. Stay tuned.....

ive got a model of this ship ive been working on since the game came out but ive no time as im still trying to finish my high detail Nebuchadnezzar (with interior) from the matrix.

anyhow to try and answer your questions, the read door is 2 parts. half rotates up inside and half rotates down like the rear ramp of a C-133

http://www.kbvp.com/sites/default/files/images/rear ramp looking aft.preview.jpg

the engines have pivots on the front control arms that tilt down and up about 5-10 degrees when the ship has high g turns at sub-light speeds in animations

1:30 for engine exhaust

as for size..id LOVE any large size u can cook out. ideally id like a 24" model to match your SR1 i have built, but i take what i can get!

Thanks for the references guys. Those help tremendously. For the engine glow I think I'll just use the same textures as on the SR1. They seem to be the same.

DarkAntz, I like the idea of a 24 inch size. It makes it bigger than the SR1 for continuity, but not too big.

As for the pivots on the engine I think I'll leave that out. Since they only move a small amount anyway I don't think it's worth it for the complexity it would add to the build.

Attached is a screen shot of the development so far. I've finished a lot of cleanup and am working on making it buildable and adding details.

Bye for now

Update and Question

Just so you all know I'm still working on it here's a few teasers, and I have a question. In the first picture below of the front of the ship, there's a panel with some kind of vent like thing behind it. What is this and how does the door/panel open?

The second picture shows the main elements of the ship. The lower hull will have a simple interior, and somehow I'll make the doors open and close. Haven't worked that out yet.

The third picture shows the main hull in more detail. There will be a base layer, with internal formers for support etc. and then the skin will be applied giving a layered effect. I think it will take two or three layers of card stock and some serious edge-coloring for the layering to look good. The skin needs to be at least a millimeter thick to really be noticeable.

As soon as I have the main hull complete I will put it out for beta testing and feedback. I'm hoping the textures come through okay. They are done at 2048x2048 resolution and Pepakura still has a 1024x1024 limit so it scales them down. Id hate to have to rework the textures to retain the resolution. Very time-consuming.

That's it for now.

This looks fantastic!
Even though it was never used/shown in ME2, in ME1, the main entry hatch (pic 1) entered into an airlock with a circular door on the other end. This doubled as a loading screen so you could watch your away team be scanned and decontaminated as air pressure equalized before you could enter the ship.
Pic 2 was your typical landing bay that contained your shuttle, Hammerhead tank and supply crates.
It's just my opinion, but I don't think you would need to detail the hatch and landing bay. Hull coverings alone look great. You do great work, Sir.

Excellent! Thanks F131. Do you happen to know how it opened? Up, down, left, right, slide into a recess, etc?

One of these days I'll get an Xbox and copies of both games.....

Stay tuned.

sjsquirrel, that little hatch is indeed the forward airlock. It was not shown in game that I can remember. If I remember right from ME1, the outer hatch opens by recessing inward and then sliding to stern. The inner circular door does pretty much the same after the bolts in the cross slide inward to unlock it. Progress looks great so far. Can't wait to try it. I am very excited about this model. Also, if you are still on the handgun kick you mentioned, would you consider doing one of the guns from Mass Effect? They had some really cool looking ones. There is a 1:1 model of the M8 avenger out already and it is very nice.
Good luck.

Wow looks good I want to start building the ssv normandy before the sr2

In or out?

Yep, it pops out from the hull and slides towards the stern.

So you say it pops out from the hull, and Daikhovalin says it recesses inward.
But at least you both agree on it sliding to stern :)

I'll mull this over and see what comes to mind. I have a few ideas....

@Daikhovalin - re the handguns, I meant I'm on a handgun building kick, not designing, although I am re-designing one I'm building. The original was hand-drawn and I'm re-doing it in 3D and adding some enhancements. I doubt I'll ever get to any of the handguns from ME.

Cheers,

Steve
