Model Of The Week : The Spice Must Flow...

When I was just a little child something got my interest and I started to develop a passion for it. That thing was: DUNE, the fantastic universe created by Frank Herbert.

I seen on this forum a while ago, that someone asked about a spice harvester papercraft. Now that person will soon get what he asked for(I hope). :D

I got the idea to start to build on one a few days ago. I wanted the basic shape of a harvester from the 1984 movie, but with tracks and a larger head for harvesting. Here is the result:

The model will be ~20cm long(suggestions for the size are welcomed). The markings you see on it are fremen words.
Now, the only thing I need to do is unfolding.

Hope you like it. :D

...and don't forget: He who controls the spice, controls the universe!

Looking forward to seeing more progress on this one. Is there a 'thopter in the future? ;)

You're title reminded me of this pic...

I must not fear.
Fear is the paper-model killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings models to total obliteration.

I am glad you all like it!

Sorry ThunderChild, I can't remember that quote and I am reading the book in another language, sadly. If I haven't read the original description(the one in the glossary) I would came with the conclusion that a spice harvester looks like a caterpillar instead of a bug. :D
I was thinking of a Carryall or the...Old Man of the Desert.

I love that pic. :D I have this one:

Good saying niebla de fuego. :)

And THANK YOU for the model of the week! :D I really appreciate it.

That is really cool! I have a great fondness for Herbert, and his Dune series is the best of his work. How big were you planning to make the model?

Thank you.

Yes, Legion, there is a thopter model, but it's a plastic model and has been made by Revell

Initially I wanted to be 20 cm long, now it will be 15 cm.

Maybe this thread will be about dunecats instead of spice harvesters ThunderChild. :D Just don't work with rhythmic noises when there are dunecats nearby...

Dune has been one of my favourite movies of all time. I remember it caused me a deep impression when I saw it in the big screen.

It was until recently I learnt that it was one of the last sci-fi movies that made an extensive use of real models in the shots. When one sees the behind the cameras material and looks at the wonderful maquettes of the spaceships one understands the quality of the craft that they used.

This is a nice harvester, it really looks like it belongs compeletly to the planet. And surely will help to keep alive the legacy of the legend.

A Thopter model based on the version used in the movie would be a nice addition. And I believe since it has angled lines and flat panels wouldn't be so difficult to design (I'm just guessing, I'm not into designing and I may be wrong about the difficulty to do that.)

Ah carp, *another* line of models in my project queue?

Deep breath:

It is by will alone I set my knife in motion.
It is by the juice of Elmer that paper acquires shape,
The shape acquires form,
The form becomes a model.
It is by will alone I set my knife in motion.

This will be an awsome model, and I agree about the cats being the little death to all models... my cat dammaged my TOS Enterprise... I was not a happy camper about that.

Now THAT is very inventive! Love the juice of Elmer bit! sign1

Update time.
Now I am editing the unfolded model to correct some things and to add others. Then I will make a print test to see how it looks. I am fearing that the fold line it is too thin...I hate that "feature" from Pepakura. If you export the model in hight resolution the line will become so thin that you can barely see it, especially if its white.

We also need some fremen to ride and stop the dunecats before they destroy this entire forum.

If you are using Pepakura, either use textures with thicker lines, or set thicker lines in the paper and print menu.

Yep, pepakura allows you to change nearly anything regarding your lines.

Oh yes, I see there was a Dune Activity book that had some basic cut&fold models, including the thopter. :)

Can someone please tell me how I can make more thicker lines? :p

What I do is: after it's all unfolded, I print the pages as a PDF using the free tool "CutePDF." I then open each PDF up using GIMP (also free), add a new path, then stroke the path at 2-pizels and medium grey.

Further, when you're building the model you need to wear this:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts-apparel/miscellaneous/e58c/

"He who controls the spice controls the universe."
So you got tagged with the pumpkin pie for the family Thanksgiving gathering. But you're out of cinnamon, and you're not about to run out to the grocery store today. Hmm. Substitutions for cinnamon. Allspice? No. Out of that, too. Cloves? Meh. Oh wait. You know what would work? Somebody pass the melange. It'll make for the best pumpkin pie ever - literally addictive. And imagine how well all the in-laws will get along after consuming it. Of course, the outcome could also be bad. The increase in sensory awareness will make the squelching noise your uncle's dentures make as he chews that much more annoying. And the football game had better be in HD, or you're totally missing out on the benefits.
