Colonial Tubeship

Hello again!

Here are some pics of my Colonial Tubeship. It was my first Pepakura model and I was wondering how it would look in the end. During assembly I noticed some flaws in the design which made me rework the layout. I painted the edges and designed an easy stand for the ship. The completed model is 44 cm long. The final result is very nice and inspired me to create some artworks: "Fire!" and "Under Attack!" (feat. Cylon Raiders from Monogram). Enjoy!

I do not recognise the ship, but it looks GREAT.
You did a good job with the scene artwork.
Are you looking at releasing it any time soon?

To Rhaven: Thanks for your comment. I found some pics of the ship on the www and was very interested in the design. I think the ship is a fan design, but it fits very well in the rag-tag fleet. It is not my creation, but I will see to it that the pattern can be made available in the download section. And concerning the artwork: Only the ships are "real"; everything else is virtual. I'll send you the pics in high-res, if you wish. CU!

You are right, it does fit in very nicely to the rag-yag fleet (for both TOS and new series).
I do hope you are able to release it. It looks like it would be a fun build.
As for th artwork, you should go into advertising. These would work great as avertisment posters for the model. You really do GREAT work.

There was a version of the tubeship released as part of the fleet in the Think Jays Galactica is Lonely thread that is also in the downloads section. There was a problem in the initial release with some intersecting parts, but a new version will be released soon.

Nice work on this one Revell-Fan. I really like the artwork you did too. I have one of those raider models I did way back when, and another that's still in the box. Of course I may never go back to plastic.

Cheers,

Steve

Hello, Steve! I'm honoured to hear from you. I have read so many of your threads on zealot. I admire your skills and everything you did for the rag-tag fleet.

I too encountered the problems with the intersecting parts. It took me a while to solve them. I have designed some new mounting arms which make assembly much easier.

This is what I did to make it look and fit better:

- cutting off all flaps on the rounded parts and glueing them from behind with paper strips
- cutting a curve into the mounting arms and closing the gaps with paper strips
- rearranging the cutting lines on (nearly) ALL tubes so that they are no longer visible
- optimizing the parts layout.

The presented model features only the modified mounting arms. I noticed that it would greatly benefit from some internal support since the tubes bend easily. I know, I could have inserted rolled up pieces of paper to increase stability, but as I said before, this was my first Pepakura model and I thought that everything would fit as is.

I hope my suggestions are useful and help improving the design of the next Tubeship version.

CU and have a nice weekend!

To Rhaven: Thank you, thank you, thank you! In fact, I am studying graphics & design and have already mastered several big projects in my hometown. At the age of six I started to draw comics (mainly BSG) and thought I could expand on that. My heroes are Carl Barks, Michael Turner ("Witchblade") and Luis Royo. If you like to see more you may check out "Defending the Galaxy" (Revell design contest submission 2007; didn't place but got a free model) and my "Terminator Vs. Predator" story:
http://www.terminatorfiles.com/interact/fanprojects/writing_001.htm (2005).
Enjoy!

Revisions

Hi Revell-Fan,

I've been away on vacation a couple weeks, hence the lateness in replying. Thanks for the kind words, and the notes regarding your changes and build techniques. I rarely use flaps anymore, but use strips on the back as you describe because it improves the results so much. Your pictures illustrate the difference superbly.

In my new release I had already added the strips to close the gaps on the mounting arms as you suggest (great minds think alike). That's one of the things I've started doing since the initial release of this model.

My mounting arms look almost exactly like your picture, but for the rear hull section I chose to leave the mounting arm solid, and cut the hull section in two. Seeing how you approached it I'm now reconsidering. I think the results might be better using your approach of cutting out the middle of the arms and closing the gaps with strips. The solid hull section would be stronger and easier to reinforce if desired.

Keep up the great work.

Rag tag fleet

Always great to see Galactica stuff! I'd love to see a full rag tag fleet!

Hey etheren, are you aware of the thread I mentioned in my post above? There is a pretty substantial fleet available in the downloads section. Counting the ones available here and on Jays site there are at least 20 of the fleet ships available.

I'd love to upload the pattern, however, I am not sure if I am allowed to do so. I am not the original creator, I only rearranged the layout for my private use. I saw a picture of the model on Trent (nothing) Henry's site and asked him if he could tell me where I could find it. Trent was so kind and sent me the original .pdo-files. However, he didn't give me an explicit permission to distribute the model, so my hands are tied for the time being. I have already sent Trent a mail and asked him if he could help me contact the creator so that I can ask him / her for permission to upload the model. I think this is the right way. So please be patient; I am sure that the tubeship will be released soon (as Steve said, a revision is on its way).

However, there is another way. If you have SketchUp 6 and if you are not afraid of unfolding things by yourself, take a look at the google SketchUp warehouse and search for "Battlestar Galactica Tubeship". Download the model, open it in SketchUp 6, export it as .kmz-file, open it in Pepakura, unfold it and print it. This works with ALL SketchUp models. This way I unfolded a top-notch Colonial One in three different sizes (the largest being 1 m ! long) and a marvellous DS9 (1,5 times as big as the amt kit)...... I'll upload them if I get the permission.

BTW, there is a nice Colonial Movers SketchUp model available, too (would love to see one in the gallery) ....

I hope I could help you. CU!

Original Model

Revell-Fan,

I did the original 3D model cleanup and prep on the tubeship as part of the fleet pack in the thread I mentioned above and Trent (nothing) did the unfolding and parts layout. That's why he has the PDO file. Trent, myself and skupilkinson were the original group that started doing the fleet ships in the above mentioned thread. Also, that's why my comments about releasing a revised version soon, because I you're working from our original version.

So, you have my permission to post revised copies, but please make mention of the original sources. If you look at the release of the mining ship (in the downloads section here) you'll see my references to the original 3D model and texture creators from the fleet pack. You should mention them, and myself and Trent as the originators of the original model patterns.

Cheers,

Steve

PS

PS.

There is also a colonial movers ship already available. Trent (I think) did a recolor of a model he found somewhere. I believe it's in the downloads section here.

Thank you very, very much for giving me your permission. I will upload the big version (44 cm) with proper reference to the original creators asap. Meanwhile I have found, unfolded and built another ship from the BSG ship pack: the Pylon Vessel. Everything is cleaned up and ready for upload, I am still working on the instructions. The model is 25 cm long. I'll add a post at the thread you mentioned before soon. See you there!

However, I couldn't find the Colonial Movers in the download section. I too have the CM from the ship pack, but her textures are not accurate (I have added the missing cones though). Do you know where I could get the repainted model?

Sorry for the delay in replying. I've been away a few days. Had to dig around a bit. The model was linked to in the post rather than added to the downloads. Here's the thread: http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=135489

Zealot, we've got a problem!

:v8:

I noticed that the download file doesn't look the way it should. There is a mistake in the instructions and some pages are sorted in the wrong order. I have sent a revised version of my files to the admin and asked him to replace the existing file by the new (and hopefully flawless) one. I apologize for any inconvenience and ask you to replace the file you have by the corrected file when it is available.

Thank you very much.

Have a nice weekend though!:wave::wave:

Hello, there!

Here is the stand for the Colonial Tubeship. Enjoy!

A big "Thank you" to Mark Heiman for allowing me to use his GalacticaBats font on this and many other BSG paper models which are still on the bench (get it here: http://battlestarfanfilms.com/resources.htm ).
