Ahoy

Here is my next project I am going to finish up on after i get my beloved sunderland done i should have my sunderland done in a couple weeks the detail parts take longer to build I spent all day touching up the final paint work on my sunderland I have 18 cylinders turned already for one engine. here is a couple shots of the mars made from card stock, and wood I painted a gray primmer coat on about 8 coats.

this is the Original proto type of the Mars flying boat we know today this is the model 170 after the war she went through several modifications from twin verticle stabilizers to one large Verticle satabilizer along with wing and fuselodge modifications. this is the Original proto type so far to my knowledge i am the onlt person who has this model no such model of this exist to my knowledge,

Here are the attachments.

Thank You Sir,
I too am quite fond of Flyingboats they have a glamour on their own. Most folks are use to seeing the JRM MARS as we know them today. But in this Original proto type as the PB2MR-1 MARS they would respond WOWwwwwwwwwwwww Did the Mars look like that. I made this from card stock the bulkhead formers and wing ribs with spars are all made from wood skinned with card stock and doped tissue to cover seams re doped and tissued again like useing filler putty for plastic and wood models this has worked years for me. I done the same on the Lad and Dads Short Sunderland I,m doing the Build thread on.

When I get my Sunderland done I will return to this thread for the rest of the finishing on the Mars.

I look forward to seeing both models finished and hope that you can go into more detail over the construction of the Mars,I have always wanted a model of the prototype and had thought of trying to convert the existing paper model but a complete scratch build might be the way to go.The attached picture of the Empire Boat was taken from just behind my house, sadly long before I was on the scene although I did get to see the last flying Sunderland quite often before she went to Florida to join Kermit Weeks collection,a wonderful sight in the air.Gary Pilsworth has produce a Short Mayo Composite model available on papermodelers.com.

Thanks once again I got to get hot on these boats and get them done I tiik the day off from the suinderland a lot of time I put into it in a short time, The rest of the parts like engine assemblies will take time. Tommorow I wi paint the Mars and atrtach some photos of her. I would love to get my hands on Short Bros. Short Mayo I love English flying boats the Sunderland has always been my favorite of all flying boats the Sunderland looks like a Flyingboat. My Lad and Dads Sunderland is comeing out better then I hoped. a lot of work still awaites for her. I will get her finished goping back and fourth from Sunderland to Mars. If you decide to make the PB2MR Mars I help you out so far to my knowledge this aircraft was newver modeled by anyone before. Well Dear Sir thanks for replying to my thread Next pictures will be all done fully painted.

Another British flying boat model by Mr Pilsworth is the incredible SARO Princess, would sit very nicely next to the Mars.

I am looking forward to this model. Being an ex Navy man
myself I lean towards the old flying boats. They are very
nostalgic. When stationed at NAS North Island I got a good
view of the PBM's that were in the bone yard awaiting scrap
out. It was a sad demise for these old boats. What scale are
you planning for this model? Ron

Are you planning on releasing this as a kit? I will surely order
one if made available. I like the size. It would look good hanging
from the ceiling in flight mode or possibly on beaching gear.
You are truly a master of the sea and modeling. Does anyone
have pictures of the beaching gear for the Mars? Ron

I have a set of Beaching gear that I made 30 years ago the beaching gear for the Mars are almost simular to the Martin P5M Marlin flying boatI drilled a hole through the fuselodge side to recieve the beacxhing gear if I decide to display on the ground. Let me get my plans together I.ll send you the templates of the whole aircxraft. the formers are all balsa wood and the skins are card stock and covered with tissue and doped. primed and painted.

Oh so very beautiful and so very well made, both the actual aircraft and your model are very much works of art. There is a free 1/72 download of the fire bomber versions here http://www.bobscardmodels.com/page3.htm as well as other free fire fighting aircraft.I had thought many times about converting her to the prototype version but I feel having seen your model that maybe a complete scratch build would be best.Stunning work thank you for sharing her with us.

Dechape's JRM-1 Hawaii MARS looks as nice as the real one did in my 1953 trip back to San Francisco from Oahu. The color is right on. I noticed the real one now has new colors and is used as a fire fighting craft in canada.
