I've got a sister thread running on Papermodelers for this project, but figured I might as well share here as well. I'm currently redesigning some of my favorite Starfleet ships, making them more accurate, easier to build, and giving them better textures.

I've completed two so far, the Steamrunner class and Prometheus class starships. The Steamrunner is mostly an update of the model that was already available on my website, while the Prometheus is an overhauled version of Jay's release, which can be built in multi-vector assault mode.

Oh, I forgot to mention; the other overhauls I'm planning are for the Durandal, (my own fan design), Norway and Centaur. I'm also likely to throw together a New Orleans class.

Love the Prometheus... Always did want a model of that one. :twisted:

Great, we need a good new orleans class model. the one thats out there looks like it would take too much work to make buildable, and the textures are really blurry

is the prometheus available for down load?

Not yet. I'm probably going to do a global release once I've completed the redesigns. I also need to make sure Jay is ok with it, since the Prometheus model is in many ways still his.

Progress on the Durandal! I've decided to give her a standard captain's yacht, the Aeroshuttle, and what's more, I've decided to actually build the damn thing at 1/1900 and make it fit in the berth. The result is a 1.5 cm wonder. I think I might need to be checked out by a psychiatrist.:razz:

That... is... AWESOME!!!!

Hah, I'm glad you enjoy it so much. Needless to say, I will be adding another layer on the berth with much more precise cuts, the current sloppyness is result of having to cut through cardstock and the cardboard it is glued to (for support, I make all of my starships this way now).

I've ran across this before with lamination. Only real way to solve it is by cutting each layer first before lamination...

Which is almost as much of a pain as cutting it after. :rolleyes:

The problem with laminating that way is that it results in a sloppy edge. If you laminate first and then cut, you get one coherent edge.

That is seriously good work! :thumb:

Would it be easier to do a general cutout through the lamination, stiffen the cutout edges with c/a then do the final work with sanding sticks/jeweler's files?

Amazing work on that tiny shuttle Paragon. I love those mini's.

re files: I picked up a nice little set with four different files in different shapes at my local Radio Shack. They're not as small as jewellers files, but small enough for most sane people ;) .

She's done, finally.

A bit of info about these images:

The first few demonstrate the mechanism in for the sliding nacelles. the "trucks" have to be able to rotate freely inside the nacelles so they can turn with the curve of the track. The nacelle is built in two halves, and then assembled around the mechanism.

Alright, some info on those details.

First up, the forward "trench" houses the secondary deflector, two torpedo launchers, and a forward targeting sensor. On the sides of the saucer are the additional targeting sensors behind the RCS thrusters. You can tell they were inspired by the Defiant.



The side of the saucer shows the detail, meant to sort of merge aspects of the ships designed for Voyager (Voyager, Prometheus, Equinox) and First Contact (Sovereign, Steamrunner, Akira). Small pairs of escape pods, the forward dorsal phaser array, and some inset windows. You can also see what resembles a 23rd century phaser bank. This design was revived by starfleet engineers to allow installation of pulse phasers not limited to forward-firing positions (like the Defiant):



Two more pulse phaser banks can be seen on the front of the saucer. There are no rear firing pulse phaser banks, they are primarily an offensive weapon on Durandal. Two more torpedo tubes can be seen, the housing located just forward of the deflector and captain's yacht:

The warp nacelle junctions include phaser arrays:



Durandal's nacelles are heavily armored, to increase the chances of maintaining warp capability in battle. When retracted, most of the vital areas of the nacelles are covered by thick armor on the secondary hull, save these three small warp field grills.



With nacelles retracted, Durandal's shields shrink to fit the smaller shape, allowing a 26% increase in shield strength. The nacelles also help provide additional power to vital systems when retracted. Plasma vents are visible along the spine of the ship. Below them are the aft dorsal torpedo launchers, above them the secondary shuttlebay.
