[Modelarz+scratch1/72] Trawler. Step-by-step

I introduce here a new naval thread, made from a 1/100 pattern, transformed to 1/72, of an old Polish Trawler of the brand "Modelarz".

Why 1/72 in place of 1/100 ?
Because I am a "wargamer" and play with 1/72 figurines, and there is a lot of opportunities to use them in modelism.

I began to modify the scale, and as it could be used in a wargame, decided to make the trawler in "waterline" configuration.

Here are the first four pictures of this modification:

The 'skeleton' of the hull is ready, and put on a flat cardboard, sized on the original hull pattern.

I wanted first use another cardboard covered with "paper planks", but too tedious : so I used the original pattern of that model ( scaled in 1/72 ).

I only add some facultative pieces to the trawler, but she could be a discret one.

Well!...so, I carry on!

The following post will show you how I have built the hull.

I put shells of card all around the "fishbone-skeleton" you've just seen above.

You can see that there is some work to adjust the shells.
And you also can see that the glue distorted the card.
It is what you have to be prepared to pay for it! (it's an expression that I found in my dictionary : fine, isn't it?...to explain that paper and water are not exactly friends!).sign1

Then I built a rescue launch:

I added some planks on the flanks...

...and built some small pieces for the deck:

I show now where are put these pieces:

AND THEN MY FIRST MISTAKE :wall1

When I transformed the scale to make the roof on the prow, I mis-used the calculator, and raised the scale near to 1/68 rather than to 1/72 , and did not see it at all; so I had a too large piece and I did not understand why !

So I continued my building, but the deck in this part of the ship was not horizontal.

As for the main deck, I used the original sheet for the prow-deck:

To see how will be the cabin on the deck, I provisory used the original one:

As you will see later, mine is completly re-built and painted white.

Than I have built the winch : first in card, then in wood an papercard, because of a deception concerning the visual effect.

You've seen above, around the winch, there are the rails of the hull.
As I build the pieces sometime together, on the last picture, rails are glued.

How did I do? I used a heavy card from a calendar...

The poop, completed...

As I was working with stain sheet, I prepared the separation lines of the hull's shells with rivets :

I did rivets as follows:

Here you can see the original pilot cabin, 1/100 scaled.
The shape...hmmm, I did not like it at all : so I changed it as follow...

If people has any interest, it makes me happy : from my point of view, it's a sure sign that I contribute to enhance the paper as a 'true' material for modelers, recycling what is generaly devoted to the bin ('trashcan' in US english!)...hum! Do I protect environment and am I eco-aware ? I don't know, but it is sure that it has not a high cost, except the energy for the light, because I often build my models in the evening :twisted: and my...sweat!(that has no cost!)...

The pilot cabin

Salut à tous!

Voici la suite : la timonerie (The wheelhouse).

As I previously wrote, I decided to change the aspect of the original cabin, as to allow me to put batteries and LEDs into, and put straight glasses (easier than curved ones).

That was after painting interior.

And here above, after putting glasses.

Follow some other details:

To give you an idea of the scale, I have put a 1/72 figurine beside the wheel.

Next post will show the illumination with 4 LEDs : for each board (starboard and port) and the foremast, and rear of the ship.

PS : I apologize if my english is not perfect , but naval english -as french too - is a special lexical field .
Whatever, I am quite sure that I use a good english, but I am not fluent in this language, and often 'false friends' could slip in my sentences an betray the meaning of my thoughts!

The lights...

Salut everybody !

En exclusivité, the lights will run : Fiat lux, HE said...

After that, I carried on with some details : a funnel or not, electric contacts to lighten the poop and the foremast, the rear mast, a crane for the rescue yawl, and a lot of small things to put , tedious things to do, but necessary!

That is the question (see title above)!

It gives a good aspect:

But it doesn't allow butresses of the rear mast:

And the original model had no big funnel.
So I did as the original model...

More details on the decks

Salut à tous!

More details on the decks means that the end comes, but details take a long time to be locate.
Here the "masts" which will support the fishing net, and the butresses of the masts strictly speaking:

Then, to put my mistake right, I made rails on the prow deck, and add a figurehead to "fill" the space let between these rails, and give the ship an african style.
I sculpted a "statue" of a stylized dog in a piece of wood, and painted it brick-red, like some exotic woods.

Hey Than, I really liked the rivet solution. and the big black winch is great. But what made me laugh was your teddy bear? figurehead. Great build and lots of creative touches. Oh, and of course I like the lighting a lot.
