Hi Folks!

For those of you who have been following my post of the set under construction, here is the finished article:

If anyone wants to make this ULTIMATE STARBASE PLAYSET for their kids, the instructions and decal sheets can be found here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/30029551@N06/collections/72157614158860278/

Mine should be pretty durable, the most fragile part is the large mountboard backdrop, but if it's no more so than some of the things Hasbro sell for their Star Wars figures.

Enjoy!

That turned out really well! Would you be opposed to someone compiling all the images into a big package and making it available for download? If you happen to have them all handy I can provide you with my email and I will take care of this for ya. I would add them to the download area here :)

If you do...

If you do that, we'll need a map to avoid getting lost in there!

:v8:

Excellent work and intimidating skill!

That diorama is incredible! Do you have any long shots of the completed station so I can get a better idea of the size and shape of this play-set?

You really did a great job on these. Much larger than any I've tried so far. I really like the size but it does take up a lot of space. My largest action figure base is 18 inches wide by 11 inches tall by 11 inches deep. I'm limited to 10 1/2 inch by 16 1/2 inch prints. I've been designing a base for my 12 inch tall Ghost Rider figure with chopper and I'm trying to work out sectional pieces that will glue onto the black foamcore leaving gaps between them to simulate broken asphalt and a brick alley wall. I've also been thinking about scifi or military walls kind of like your design where you print to cardstock, cut out the panels and glue them to black foamcore, again leaving a gap between the panels to give it a little layering to look more 3D. You could printout onto cardstock and leave white areas in the design that the next print would glue on top of making multiple layers to simulate depth. You would have to color the edges to get the full effect.

Clif,

Thanks for your feedback. To be honest, the backdrop folds up and the buildings can be stored into a relatively small space, so really the whole set is very easy to store out of sight.

The dacals are printed onto A4 self adhesive sheets and applied straight onto the card or foamcore.

For the Foamcore models I designed the decals to have folding sections so that there is no fraying at the edges.

I'll have to work on my new figure base this weekend and see what I can come up with on the layering idea. Keep up the good work. Photoshop is the bomb. Theres pretty much nothing you can't do if you have enough memory. I bought this book from Amazon a while back: 3D Game Textures: Create Professional Game Art Using Photoshop (Paperback)

Its great and teaches you a lot about weathering artwork that you have already created.

I know your son will enjoy this for some time to come. My son is 32 and you should have seen his face when I gave him his custom KISS Concert Stage that I made him for Christmas. I'm still working on a set of video screens to use as a backdrop.

Clif,

Thanks for the link, that looks like my next Birthday present.

Without sounding condesending, I think thast it is very sweet that you are still making stuff for your 32 year old son.

My father used to make me loads of cool things, planes, remote controlled boats etc, etc, but he stopped when I was about 13. (I'm 40 now).

What a great Dad you are!!

Thanks Man! If you can't design and build for family and friends what good is a hobby. I enjoy building for family more than I do for myself. Its the look on their face when they get something that no one else has. Its a one of a kind. I made something for a friend at work for her little girl for Christmas and 5 minutes after she took it to school my friend got a call from the teacher that about 20 parents wanted the same thing for their child. I had to say it was one of a kind I wasn't making copies. I could have but it would cheapen the gift. I hope your son enjoys his one of a kind gift from DAD!!!!!
