This WIP for the H.M.S Warspite is being made in Loving Memory of the father of GIXERGS {Phil} Phil who is a very kind person and very good friend has sent me the original unmade paper model of the Warspite to make {a favourite of his and so too of his late father} Phil tried to build it in time for his father to see before he died, but sadly time wasn't with him to do so. He purchased the kit again, but has never had the heart to start it !. It is a great honor for me to be given this model to make on his behalf, and all i can say is THANK YOU Phil and i hope i can do it justice.
Also to say that this is a favourite ship of our good friend SMYFE so i hope you enjoy this wip too my friend. Regards Pete.

Hi Pete, there is no doubt at all that i will enjoy this thread :thumb:, I know that you will do the Warspite the justice she deserves, and at the same time doing a great honor to the memory of Phil's father.

Best wishes

Thank you very much Pete for the great honour you do my Father and myself. Although my Father, Derek Julian Wright , had no connection to the HMS Warspite as a Margate lad he had a great love of the sea and the Grand Old Lady had a special place in his heart next to his beloved Tall Ships.I bought the kit to build for him because I knew he liked her but had not realised just how much alike in spirit they were. HMS Warspite was a Fighting Ship in every sense of the term. She took a beating at Jutland, survived the between wars rearming and took another beating in WW2. She scored the longest moving ship to moving target hit was bombed, torpedoed, shelled and mined. If she couldn't get there on her own she was towed into battle never ran and gave no quarter. Due to be scrapped she once again took up the fight and ran herself aground forcing her to be scrapped where she was, truly a Grand Old Lady. HMS Warspite and my Father both had this spirit and both when faced with an untimely and ignoble end faced it head on, bravely and with dignity. Thank you my friend for finally building the model I could never finish.

You are VERY welcome Phil

You have made me feel SAD and HAPPY all at the same time my old mate and has i have said before, it is a pleasure and honor to make this grand old ship for you. I enjoyed all that history you gave there, i wasn't too good at history at school {never saw the need for it then} but now {in grown up land} i find all small details very interesting, and trawl through items like never before... I grew to realize that without our history we are vertually nothing. Since i joined ZEALOT the rewards have been super, it gave me back my faith in human nature, it gave me a sence of worth, it gave me somewhere to hang out and enjoy all the marvellous hobbies and it gave me some good friends... You being one of them and i don't need to mention anyone else because they all know who they are when reading this. The Tirpitz will see the final few parts added this evening, and the results will be uploaded this week. With a clean slate - some new blades and plenty of SNIPS, the work on the WARSPITE will be underway. Stay tuned. All the best to you my friend. Regards Your old mate Pete :thumb:

You have other friends? :eek:All I have is a piece of string I call Tim and a small rock that doesn't really like me:violin1:.I look forward to seeing the finished Tirpitz and to finally see what the Model of the HMS Warspite looks like when not sticking out of the bin. Thanks again my Mate Phil

This will be cool to follow. If I recall correctly, you built the Titanic to honor a family member of yours who worked on the ship?

Good luck - we'll be watching.

Hi Rick. Just one question.... What are you on about ? Regards Pete.

As I said just one of my pet peeves. Calling one of Her Majesties Ships, the HMS grates on my nerves. Think about it, doesn't "the Her Majesties Ship Warspite" sound at best awkward?

Getting old and cranky I guess... :)

To be honest most people would read it as The HMS Warspite rather than filling in the rather more awkward Her Majesties Ship Warspite although of course she was His Majesties Ship Warspite in fact she served under 3 Kings George V, Edward VIII and George VI. There have been several HMS Warspites including the current Her Majesties Submarine Warspite. the Grand Old Lady herself was given a complete refit between the wars and looked a completely different ship afterwards. The WW2 version of her is probably the best known especially to a generation of Airfix modellers. The is the version of her that Pete is building, the version that to many of us is The HMS Warspite. Pete has very kindly agreed to build the model as a tribute to my late Father for whom I tried to build it for but was to slow, I have never been able to bring myself to build her since. I believe the building of her will also bring up memories for Smyfe as well as I'm sure countless others that have built the Aifix kit with their Fathers so I think given the emotion involved with the build referring to her as The HMS Warspite might be overlooked.

I too have a thing for HMS Warspite. I have a few of the books, including the Anatomy of the Ship one.

I have to admit I prefer the lines of the original build. This class of super-dreadnought, and the Warspite in particular, really showed their metal at Jutland when they were confronted with the firepower of the German Fleet. Warspite’s steering gear went AWOL and she was exposed to a lot of enemy fire. However, the media take on Jutland at the time was that it was as a British defeat and as Warspite returned for repairs on the Forth she was pelted with coal and stones from “disappointed” workmen working on the Forth (Rail) Bridge.

Does this model have a full hull?

A war only starts if both sides turn up !

I feel like a fish out of water here ! what i know about NAVAL TERMS could be written on the back of a matchbox, so i am very SORRY to offend anyone with my obvious LACK of KNOWLEDGE on the subject. My friends Phil and Mick know their stuff, and to me what they say go's. I know that there's an awful lot of things i should know, but hey... i'm building a MODEL and NOT trying to impress anyone with anything, just trying to give you guys something to enjoy looking at!. I came from the REAL SPACE and other similar threads, and found i got more pleasure building the ships - this one's in memory of Phil's dad, so please don't tarnish a thread that isn't even started yet. The saying as it that " A war can only start if both sides turn up " let's not then start one over a few MINOR words in terms. Trying my best. Regards. Pete

That wasn't aimed at you my friend.... i just get wound up with all the technicalities thrown into something that is a beautiful hobby. Some seem to think that numbers count for more than paper snips and folds ! I know a great deal about Rockets, and especially the shuttle, but when over on the real space thread i didn't build things with all the knowledge leading me on.... it was the FUN and ENJOYMENT of making the paper models of them. I really love building things, and i really do mean that it's a honor to build the Warspite for you, and also know that Mick will enjoy it all too. The other guys that follow this thread - i hope they get enjoyment from it aswell. I had a look at the video link mate {very nice} but what model brand is that one ? Right i'm off to take the last few pics of the Tirpitz. Regards. Your old mate Pete.

I'm guessing she is a scratch built model and by the look of the Walrus not a small one either!
