The Strombecker Rock Island ROCKET

Nice picture. From time to time it has been a issue here. Not just the wood kit but various drive systems, marketed and kitbashed. Yours is the nicest of the original wood kits.

Some Oldies....

OK...Here's a couple of the oldies that were first purchased by my ol' man waayyy back in 1950-51 +/-, and were the first "consist" we had until the early 60's when we started a layout. All of these are Athearn metal kits, with the exception of the hopper, which is a Varney plastic kit, and the caboose, which is wood. Most of these have undergone some minor restoration, as time & travel have taken their toll, but all are operational on my LC&P. As can be seen, all have been converted to KD couplers.

First up, a WP 40' silver box car.

Next, a Northern Pacific "classic" orange reefer...

A CYTX tanker follows...

A Seaboard 50' boxcar (I have recently acquired another one of these with a different #..!!)

The Varney NYC hopper...

And bringing up the rear, Ol' Faithfull. I had at one time comsidered lettering it for the LC&P, but thought it should be left as my Ol' Man left it....

There's also a flat car in the collection, as well as a 0-4-0 and 4-6-2, all from the same time period. Unfortunately, they've fallen victim to Zamac "disease"...and are slowly desintegrating....

Well, that about wraps it up...!!

Nice sharing a bit of history with you all.....sign1

Nice old school stuff there, Gus:thumb::thumb::thumb:

That caboose looks like an old Silver Streak kit. Life Like went on to crank out many of those two bay hoppers after Varney gave up the ghost.

1950 Gilbert #155

Hello Toptrain1,
I have a 1950? #155 0-6-0 switcher in decent shape. It has been in my family since new. Through the years, the front coupler has been removed and lost. Other than that, I think the condition is very good. Is it worth trying to repair this? I also have the Reading lighted caboose from the original set. I found a web page that has all of the old Gilbert catalogs and discovered that this was a 1950 model. My older brother thinks that he received it in Christmas 1952. It's nice to see someone like yourself trying to preserve these older well made US products. I can send along some pics if you're interested. What do you think something like this is worth?
Have a great day,
Chris

ShayGetz and his Tong-N- Cheek impact car, and Guss's line up of oldies are great. Criss the 155 lives on, on my layout.

Hey Chriss --About 0-6-0 # 155

This Gilbert loco that you have should be run. If you have lost that old funny looking hook coupler don't feal bad. You said it was the one in the front pilot. If the tender coupler is still their use it when you run the set.
Me I don't run my trains as sets. I put what ever i like behind my locos. Most people I know with the exception of one, do the same thing. The one Bob N. is a collector's, collector. Me I play with my trains, and it's fun. Someday I might grow up and be serious, but i doubt it. Here are my #155s. One is original the other I repainted and relettered in gold.

My favorite "oldie" is the Aristo-Craft Thomas Rogers mogul (2-6-0) which I bought around 1960. I recently repainted the boiler and cab, and did an overall cleanup. Then I replaced the tender trucks and added a Kadee coupler. With a little La Belle grease and oil, the loco runs as good as new.
