Hi guys, does anybody know if you can get the names of buildings and such in Google Earth? I need to find out what businesses and warehouses are the ones i need to model for my M&ET modules that ive created trackplans for. The whole buildings will not be modeled, just for sides or fronts of them on most of them, but i want everything to be prototypical, including the names of the companies that occupy the buildings.... Any help? Suggestions on how to get this sorta information?

Kurt, that link did help some, but it isnt listing the names of the buildings, just the addresses for the most part? http://tinyurl.com/6cs2ml

I did a search on Mitchell Rd. with the link you gave me Kurt and thats what i got in the above link. It doesnt list any industry names, just what looks to be street addresses?

Here is a view of what im looking at in Google Earth (Mitchell. is in yellow): http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=37.635053,-120.95893&z=16&t=h&hl=en

If you zoom in a bit, the buildings i need the names of are the ones to the left of Mitchell Rd. and to the right of Spenker Ave. I also did a serach on Spenker Ave. and this is what i got: http://tinyurl.com/6mhm7h Nothing really useful lol. There are a couple industries listed in the spenker ave. search but i cant put them in place on Google Earth.... Its all confusing to me lol

I really dont want to, but i may have to suck it up and take a trip out there to get the info i need

It's not rocket surgery
In some larger (mainly US) cities, you can get "street level" views on Google Maps. I've only tried this in NYC, but it's pretty cool. It would give you a look at the buildings, but of course it would be from the "default" (i.e. street, not track) position.

Thanks Andrew, that is actually pretty cool, im looking on Mitchell Rd. in Modesto right now. I think this might actually help out alot  Of coarse, i will be modeling mostly the backs of these buildings along the tracks, wish they would do a track view  lol

If you use igoogle to get to Google Earth, you can find collections of maps.

For example, Gas Buddy.com may use Google Map to plot the locations of gas stations in your area with the price.
Some Google Maps have been put into the public domain.
there can also be links that put pgotos in the location.

If you find a Grade Crossing with streetview, it is possible to turn the camera
& get a view down the track from the location. I've done it with the Lumber St location in Chicago. Sorry you don't get any train photos unless they may be "parked".

I was able to get a good look at one of the buildings i want to model using the Google Maps "Street View" but i cannot quite makeout the name of the company that occupies the building . Im looking at a list of buildings in the Beard Industrial Complex and none of them look close to what it looks like on the sign i found outside this building on the corner of Mitchell Rd and Lapham Ave. And when i try and zoom in on the sign, it gets way to blurry to read wall1 lol

I still think this is a very useful tool, thanks again Andrew

I don't know the local state laws, but...

In Ohio, you can look up properties on the auditor's website for each county. For instance...
http://www.hamiltoncountyauditor.org/realestate/rover30.asp
-select to search by owner...enter Lewis Marvin, and you can see his home in Indian Hill! Carson Palmer's home is approx $2mil in value according to the auditor, has 5600 sq ft, and sits on 5 acres. He as an 1800 sq ft room that would be perfect for a model railroad!

TruckLover,
Try Microsoft live (http://www.live.com) and go to bird's eye view. It has much higher resolution and you can circle around the buildings and can probably get the names off the signs.

Edit: I can't use street view here so I guess that would be better. Sorry, Tried to help.

I have managed to get a few of the company names off some of the buildings down the streets and tracks i will be modeling for the M&ET. Among them include:

  • Del Monte Corporation (2 buildings)
  • Georgia Pacific (one HUGE building)
  • Siligan Container Corporation
  • Stanisiaus Food Products Company
  • Diamond Walnut Growers
  • Versa Cold Logistics Services (2 buildings)
All of these are large industrial type buildings

I still need to find names on 7 more buildings that are in the plans that i got from Google Earth. Hopefully i can dig them up and find them somewhere on the web  lol

Im going to post some aerial shots of the buildings still in question that i need to get the company names on. See if anyone can help or knows what they are

The buildings i need in this shot are the ones that are dead center. They to the left of Codoni Ave. Its the group of 5 buildings, the top 2 next to Yosemite Blvd. are Del Monte Buildings. But im stumped on the other 3

Here are some "steet views" of the 2 buildings running next to Codoni Ave.

No street view for this one, there are no marked streets around these buildings, just what seems to be a alley sorta road for the buildings

If you can view the front of the building, you should be able to rotate the view to the back. I did that when I was tracking the Yreka Railroad.

hmmm i cant seem to be able to do that, i can only view a view from the streets looking left or right. I wish it would allow you to down railroad tracks too  lol
