figured out how to make MRC decoders work

The mrc problems are very easily solved. All you have to do is unplug the speaker, it works real good now. Next I think I am going to get a sound only decoder. Any suggestions out there?

Soundtraxx DSX. Very good sound, some of the best I've heard.

I haven't heard the Digitrax sound-only units yet (at least not in person... there's a couple on Youtube, but one of them is a custom sound-file job).

I was looking at DSX at their web site. They sound good but rather pricey, I can get LC decoders for less.

The LC stands for "Low Cost". There's a reason. They skimp on the sounds, especially the background sounds like compressors and dynamics. The sound quality of the DSX's is much better than the LC's.

Also, the LC is a mostly-full-function controller, like your MRC. Although it doesn't have a decent motor-drive circuit. You can adjust pulse-width to quiet some motors, but there's no back-EMF or anything fancy like that.
