Rampaging railfans...

It looks like the situation with railfans is really getting out of hand, as these photos, taken at the Kiski Junction RR, in Schenley, PA. illustrate. (The photos were taken from the fan's confiscated camera.)

While KJRR GM Charlie Bowyer walks ahead to throw a switch, an intrepid railfan hopped aboard the track inspection vehicle, brazenly snapping this photo:

He even managed to get this shot...

....before being unceremoniously ejected from the car while attempting another photo....

At least the walk back to Schenley offered additional scenic views of the Kiski River:

The next day, undeterred, the out-of-control rail buff returned, hopping aboard the line's well maintained S-1 diesel locomotive as it departed Schenley, with empties for the Allegeny Ludlum plant at Bagdad, PA.:

Wanting neither to leave the controls, nor to provoke an incident, Marty, the engineer, agreed to pose for a photo:

But, seconds later, the rogue railfan wrested the throttle from his grasp....

Fortunately, Charlie, the GM, managed to enter the cab, and with Marty's help, was able to subdue the maniacal fan and gain control of the runaway loco:

With the day's work done, the crazed fan was turned over to authorities, who later learned that he was a foreigner, who had somehow managed to slip by local security forces.
He's currently being held in a state correctional facility, with this view of the Norfolk Southern line:

To paraphrase an old safety adage, "Expect a railfan, on any track, at any time, and in any direction."

WOW! That is one PAMPERED S-1. Glad to see one like that, especially in regular service. I used to look for reasons to Bad Order our SW1200 each night so we could grab the S-4 or S-1 when I worked at ST&E.

In fact, we all did.

BTW, I'm now intrigued, do you have any photos of the outside of the inspection vehicle? Looks like Ford Truck mirrors on it?

I thought that I had pictures of the exterior: the "authorities" must've erased them. ;) Charlie can probably supply some photos, but you're pretty observant regarding those mirrors: if I recall correctly, power is from a Ford straight 6, so there are probably other Ford parts in use.

Just to clarify things: While some railfans do get careless and out-of-control, those that keep safety in mind are, I'm sure, welcome at the Kiski Junction. Charlie and his entire crew were extremely accommodating and hospitable, and I'll most certainly return next year (providing I can slip by "security" again ;)).
Here's a LINK to some more info.

That is the nicest trimmed S1 cab I've ever seen! Was the hogger's seat overstuffed leather? Where's the hot tub? :D

I was looking for railfans in the figures section of the LHS.
Closest I got was a set of ex-railfans wearing black-and-white stripes.

HILLARIOUS to come through there working a train. Most of our trains "self" issued Track Bulletin Form "A"'s through there the one year I was working down there for Amtrak. Much fun, much fun.
