Guess what Walthers is doing????

Member the Cornerstone Series "The Works"? Well Walthers is re-releasing these structures starting January 20th 2009, and you wanna know the even better part about them???? THERE WAY BETTER THEN THE LAST ONES, These ones being SUPER detailed!!!!      Im so freaking exited about this news, quite possibly the BEST news ive ever heard before in MRR

The ONE down side to these new releases, there EXPENSIVE

Here is a sneak peak to the kits there re-releasing:

Blast Furnace
Rolling Mill
Coke Oven & Quencher with Larry & Quencher Cars
Blower Engine House
Blower Engine House Piping Kit
Hot Metal Bottle Car 3-Pack
Slag Car 3-Pack

The Hot Metal Bottle cars and the Slag Cars are available in single cars as well for $31.98 each.....

Walthers also announced a Hullet Ore Unloader!!!!!   No pics of this kit yet, its due to be released on June 28th, 2009 so pics of it should be coming out after the first of the year

Im hoping there also going to be re-releasing the Ore Dock....

These buildings are going to be FAR from cheap, i did the math and for one of each of the buildings announced as of right now, its $889.88, and that doesnt even inlcude the slag car and hot metal bottle car 3-packs  with just one of each of those 3-packs, the total jumps to $1064.84    for me, i am going to want more then just one 3 pack of each of them, PLUS the ore cars, coal cars, coke cars...... This is not going to cheap to model lol

I still however am SUPER exited for these new re-leases

whatabout you guys? or am i just crazy here?

Keep It Moving!
I know my club will be, they've been wanting to build a steel complex since they got the extra space to build in. THey do have the blast furnace built, as well as some of the other structures, but its far from being built. The problem is there is a staging yard right under the layout there. we are working on a way to move the steal mill out of the way so we can reach staging below.

I'm interested in the Blower Engine House, but I've got a Cement plant that can use it.

N? Heck you guys recently had the old school Walthers kits, us HO guys have had to wait twice as long!

hehehehe I did "the works" in N scale, the blast furnace, coke oven, and rolling mills. Dont get me wrong, the N Steel Mill from Walthers is AWESOME but i am STOCKED for the HO scale kits finally being re-released. when i got into the hobby, the HO steel mill kits had already been discontined (besides the rolling mill) and they were REALLY hard to find just like they are now.... its been about 4 years since i started into the hobby and ive always wanted to do the steel mill in HO but was forced to do it in N because they were more readily available at a way cheaper cost....

i dont know how im going to afford the HO kits that are coming back out, but im going to start saving for them as soon as i can and buy them bits at a time

I had ordered a faller kit once i found out the others were no longer around .MY luck any way i will look into it once i get some dough saved up .

look at this site daveayers.com I also found a group that Models ovens furnaces and mills .the railroad takes a back seat to these constructions .just over the top..
I have started my process of telling the Chef how much room we have in the basement would like to add a shelf layout .
thanks for the heads up .also park lane hobbies in Dyer IN. has a great selection of rolling stock and so on for the steel mill i think some are made local.

Bradley,

Are you talking about getting into HO scale ? If so and you really want to build a steel mill complex. There are a few web-sites for both information and modeling of steel mills.

Its not as hard to model a working steel mill. In fact should you order the new walthers kits, you'll be set. I warn you though ,these kits will break the bank.
Another side to modeling of steel mills is scratch building.Better get use to scratch building / kit-bashing structures.

Heres is a few yahoo forum groups to join.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/steelmodeler/

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/STEEL/

Heres another group to join, tons of info on this one.

These are all great steel groups to join and with time, building a steel mill will take shape.

no actually i ment n scale, not z. guess i just got the 2 mixed up. i love HO scale just dont have the space for it right now. i want to build a one industry layout with lots of shunting operations, and steel mill gives me the best options. i know of all the walthers kits. they have all the n scale in stock or other hobby shops do, and they are not as expensive as HO.

i guess there are just alot of terms that i am unfamiliar with. im trying to read through other posts to try to get a grasp of it.

i just want to operate it prototypically. raw materials in, where hot bottle cars go. where the slag comes in and where its dumped. where the building would be situated with each other.

i dunno. i know what im trying to ask, just not how to word it cause im not totally familiar with all the tems and what everything is called and such.

nice to see walthers is re-releasing these. i have all the kits listed above with the exception of the piping and blower house kit, and they are very nice kits. but the price for three bottle cars seems sorta high. i only paid $31.00, for three of them and that was only three years ago.

Hi Bradley, and welcome to the Gauge

I got 3 of the Steel Mill Kits in N scale, i think i mentioned them above, but ill list them again for you, i built and weathered the blast furnace, rolling mills (2 kitbashed together), and the coke oven and quencher.

I didnt really look into it all that much, but to model a good operation, you are going to need ALOT of space, as most of these buildings are spread out. In N scale, they have the Blast Furnace, Electric Furnace, Rolling Mill, Coke Oven & Quencher, and the New River Mining Co. and i think the Coal Flood Loader as well.

Coal would be loaded into coal hoppers from the coal mine, this would be miles away from the actual steel mill, loads would be brought in and brought to the blast furnace. Limestone is also brought in on trains as well as coke from the coke ovens. Coke is Iron Ore that has been transformed and melted down in extreme tempatures. All 3 of these materials are fed into the blast furnace. The slag from the process is put into slag cars and hauled away from the furnace. The molten iron is transported in the hot metal bottle cars where it is taken to the BOF or Basic Oxygen Furnace. lime, Llux and Scarpe is added to the molten iron. From the BOF its off to the rolling mill where it is cast into huge slabs of red hot steel or coils. from the rolling mill, its transported in gondolas, coil cars, and flat cars to be delivered to customers.

This is just a basic non-detailed process. If you want an in-depth description, there is lots of info on the internet. Here is a diagram i found on the internet that shows the steel process: http://www.ltvsteel.com/htmfiles/diagram2.htm

There is also a AWESOME book by Dean Freytag thats titled "The History, Making, and Modeling of STEEL"

Here is also a GREAT link i found REALLY helpful and i printed out for my use: http://www.nvntrak.org/modules/alkem_steel__part_2.php

Hope this helps you out a little bit

Your right, the bottle cars were ALOT cheaper, but this time around, there not in kit form, there ALL GOLD LINE models fully assembled with metal wheelsets and super detailed, with different road numbers and all. Now you will pay $31 for one car instead of 3 lol

thats interesting the bottle cars are coming assembled now. for a speciality type car that comes aasembled and detailed, $31.00 doesnt sound too bad. i did get to see a picture of the rolling mill today at my lhs. i didnt know that it now comes with a fully detailed interior, which looks really nice. its definately a major improvement.

You make a good point about the price of the bottle and slag cars. They are specialty cars and for fully assembled and detailed, they are a fairly reasonable price now that i think about it more.

Im so exited for the rolling mill. Did you happen to see how long this one would be? is it longer then the last one?

I would like to do 2 of each of the Blast Furnace and the Rolling Mills and kitbash them together to make them MASSIVE but thats now a TON of money to do so lol

judging by the picture i saw today, the rolling mill looks almost double the size that the original ones were. also the photograph i saw of the blast furnace looks awsome too. appears they added a lot of detail that the original ones didnt have either. all and all i would say all these buildings and cars in this series are going to fantastic.

your right trucklover that book that freytag wrote is awsome, and i think an invaluable resource for anyone who is interested in modeling stell mills. my opinion bradely is to get this book , as freytag offers a lot of good tips and ideas about modeling a steel mill. the book may be a little expensive, but you get what you pay for and trust me, its a book you really value.

also i was so impressed by the detail on the rolling mill, that i pre-ordered one my my lhs today. they gave me an awsome deal if i pre-ordered one. granted it wont be here till late april, but thats ok, i'm sure it will be worth the wait.
