Building and Kitbashing a Walthers Cornerstone Refinery

Hi guys. Ive recently gotten 3 Walthers Cornerstone Series Refinery Kits. They wernt cheap by any means lol. One of them is the Deluxe Edition Walthers Produced that has extra brass details and such like my Red X Cement Building had. I paid $77 for this one  . The other 2 kits are the regular refinery kits. I paid $35 for one of them, and $56 for the other. The $56 one came with a Tank Car Loading Platform Kit, Tank Detail Kit, and a Piping Kit.

Ive decided that i want to kitbash them all together or kitbash the 2 regular kits together and have the deluxe one on the side or in front of the other 2 to give the effect of a LARGE refinery. I will be posting progress shots as i go along building and kitbashing the 3 kits, as well as the Tank Car Loading Platforms, and the HUGE Storage Tanks + the Truck Loading Rack (which is already built)

I have plans to do 2 tank car tracks, with 4-5 unloading/loading racks for each track. So thats 8-10 kits lol. The HUGE Storage tanks will be the Walthers Cornerstone Tall Storage Tanks and Wide Storage Tanks. I plan to use 2 of each with the berms and lots of piping leading to the loading racks and refinerys.

Stay Tuned, LOTS of progress to come. Im going to do the whole build in this thread, rather then crowd my Shelf Layout Thread lol. final pics with refinery in place and tracks..... will be posted in that thread. This thread is just for the build

This looks impressive already. Great job. I can't wait to see this massive kitbash when you are through with it.

Thanks Mike

This might have to be another 8' long industry lol, being that my shelfs are only 18" wide, although i could widen the shelfs for this MASSIVE industry

That's quite a piece of equipment! I think it looks pretty realistic!

Thanks Cid, so far ive painted the bases medium grey for concrete, the beams rust primer, and all the piping and heat exchanges aluminum silver

This will be full of color when its done, and certainly ALOT to weather

Yeah, i have one of these refiniries unbuilt still. The refinery and an Automobile transfer facility (love autoracks) are hopefully going to be the big industries on my new addition if i build in the freight direction (parts of me are still leaning towards a commuter/NEC layout. IS ther no middle ground!).

Anyway, its cool that you got brass detail parts. Do you have a picture of them, and where they go? I'm crazy enough to scratchbuild things, but i gave up looking at the real thing. They are all over Conrail's Chemical coast (in NJ) and Port Reading Yard has a nice big oil refinery there.

LMAO!!!

I have a Autorack Transfer Building, as well as my Stamping Plant (2 kits already built and kitbashed together) and 2 Auto Assembly Plants lol

I can post a pic of the Brass details and the platforms on which they will go. Ill take some pics of the brass "tree" and the instructions for the brass parts. The only brass in this kit is the handrails for the platforms

Where are you getting all of this stuff? everytime i look at your threads, you have more and more stuff! you're making me jealous!sign1

I have the transfer station as well, with the ramps, so i'm hoping i can model that portion of it. i'm sure there are an abundance of european cars as well (in NJ, most of the cars have just been shipped in from over seas to be distributed elsewhere. There used to be ford and GM plants up here, but they all got shut down. stupid economy+ popular foreign cars!), so it should be a fun project if i ever get to it.

I'm surprised they don't sell that stuff seperate somewhere. I feel like brass handrails would be a common detail part. Maybe i just haven't noticed them.

If you really want to model an oil refinery, check out the August 2007 issue of "Scale Rails". That is amazing....

sign1 I get alot of stuff from e-bay

I want to have 2-3 Distribution Ramps for my Auto scene lol. Problem is i dont have ANY room for any of them cuz there all so massive. The Stamping Plant is GIGANTIC, same with the Auto Assembly Plant (both of them are 2 kits combined and kitbashed together to make them double the size of a regular kit) and the Tire Plant is also no small building either. and for the Distrabution Facility, it requires a lot of space as well.... An entire layout could be built with just these buildings along

Same here, i think Walthers should offer the brass handrails for all there Cornerstone Kits in replacement of the flimsy theapo plastic ones. I would be all for them and buy them for all my buildings....

Heres a pic for you of the brass "tree" that came with the kit i said i would post:

Well i finally made some more progress on the kits today. Was a busy weekend and i didnt get a chance to do any work on them, the girlfriend had me occupied all weekend hehehehe

Heres some pics, with the main Fractionating Tower, 2 smaller towers and some piping in place and glued to the base, this thing is TALL!!!!

I try to avoid Ebay where i can. Then again, Ebay is the only place i can even find half the stuff i buy. Then again, i got no more room to build stuff in anymore, so i guess there is a reason i don't have an influx of stuff anymore, lol! I need a new layout...

you're gonna have to find people to start a club and raise money for some space or something!

Thats why i'm sticking to just the distribution point. I just need a stub long enough to hold a reasonable train of auto racks, and enough of a staging lot for people to figure out what it all is. I've got two tracks with a 4-5 car capacity, depending if i'm using articulated sets or not.

I did like that tire plant, but i never got a hold of one.

Yeah, well, i guess it would make things more expensive than i'd want to pay for. besides, there is always scratchbuilding. time to bust out the wire and soldering iron...sign1

Get your priorities straight, you have a refinery to build, and you're out fooling around!

Yep, thats how i like them! What you really have to do though, is add some lights! Up here in NJ, they are always like christmas trees. Atleast walthers sells details for that!
