HOWDY, sun and 58 today, getting cooler. I had a very nice phone chat with Brutus today, always good to hear from him. We got no world problems solved but did talk about trains and future train plans. Put my boat in its winter spot, seems like I just got it out and back it goes. Oh well have a good Monday...S.J.

Jeffrey, Looks like a major track realignment is in order. May have to call out the heavy equipment for this one. I see that you already have the backhoe nearby. If this is on the mainline, you may have to build a bypass loop first.
This won't be as complex as it appears. Instead of the existing tracks being moved to conform to the crossover, the crossover will be expanded to conform to the existing tracks. The crossover will be cut apart at the diverging track then each half of the crossover will be placed into it's respective place in the existing tracks and a piece of straight track will be inserted to join the diverging tracks.

Good morning folks

It was 51 F this morning. High today will be 68 F. There are Frost Advisory posted for north and west of us. It looks like it is getting time to winterize the fish pond.

We had a great weekend with the Cub Scout Popcorn Show and Sells as we sold almost $900.00. Next weekend will be the crazy one as we have three locations. The third got added Saturday when the church that sponsors us offered us space at their White Elephant Sale. Not much else happened. We did the grocery shopping.

I never even got a chance to look at a train this weekend. Maybe I will get some modeling in during the week.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Morning all. Beautiful day. Love fall. Hope all have a great week. Got meetign today and tonight. Same for tomorrow.

Chief, The big down side to Fall is that it is followed by WINTER
wall1

Tom, I don't winterize the pond until we get several sub freezing nights. Usually mid November. Don't think I mentioned it but we took a big hit from a Blue Huron. Got about 3/4 of our fish. Most of the large ones. Now have screens over the pond and haven't seen him (or Her) for about 10 days. Any one know it they migrate in the winter? We have several farm ponds and a stream nearby but have never seen a Huron at any of them. Have had the pond for 7 years and this was the first Huron that we have had raid it.

The big thing right now is if we get a frost. The plants may not survive so I have to sink them in the deep end to protect the tublars.

A neighbor lost all their fish, about 20 large koi to heron a couple of years ago. Since we are on the Atlantic Flyway and a couple of good flaps of a wing from the National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum I am always worried that we will get one. Our backyard and front yard do get visits from Red Tail Hawks, and Paragon Falcons. Generally they leave the fish alone. I think the hawks may take a frog or two, however.

Came home from my appointment at the foot doc and found a big box (18"x18"x6") by my door. What was in it? My Digitrax DCS50 and 8 DZ125 decoders. After I go through the manual on this thing I'll see about hooking it up. Looking at the back of the unit it appears to be fairly easy. All those decoders will probably take a week to install unless I get on a really good roll, then I could knock them out in a day.
On my other project, shoehorning a Bachmann LH crossover into my yard area, I looked at the area and noticed right off that the tracks are way too far apart. I have two options. 1) Pull up a bunch of track and re-lay the front part of the inside loop so the tracks connect to the crossover, or 2) cut the crossover in two and work the two halves into their respective places in the passing siding and the inside loop and put in a straight piece of track to join them. In the following photos the choice I made will be immediately obvious. If the mountain won't come to Mohammed then Mohammed must go to the mountain.

This is how the crossover started out:

And after being cut in two and trimmed:

The trackside shed (under the straight piece) and two of the turnouts will be removed. If the turnouts can be salvaged I may be able to use them elsewhere. If not, they'll be ripped out in pieces. The other two existing turnouts will have their diverging tracks cut and the points soldered in the through track position. This is gonna take a while.

Evening all,

Tom, We still have a few left, but not sure how many as they are scared to death and won't come up to eat. I have an upside down milk crate on the bottom of the pond with a water lily pot on top of it that provides cover for them as well as a lot of plants. We had 30+ fish. Only one koi but some really nice gold fish. I think the heron got most of the big ones. Not long ago I told my wife that we ought to give some of them away as the pond was getting to full, not to worry. The plants that I have seem to be amazingly hardy. I did keep a pair of tropical lilies in the greenhouse the last two winters, but this year with the cost of fuel I am not going to heat it all winter. It will be cheaper to replace the lilies in the spring.

We have had hawks take birds at the bird feeders a number of times. In a couple of days they are back as
usual.

Jeffrey, that project should keep you out of trouble for a while.

Hi guys....Just got back from spending a few days with the grandkids...It's the only "thing" that beats trains...!! For those of you that aren't grandpas yet...you don't know what you're missing..!!

Question...I've read several times that ponds are "winterized"...What is it, and why do they need it..?
