Hi Jacques,

You might also be interested in other items that filled silos and elevators.

I've heard that the Redpath Sugar Museum is excellent.

Thanks for the interesting link TinGoat. I was confused because at first I thought you were talking about the Redpath Museum at McGill university here in Montreal lol.

One thing that puzzle me is that why do Canadians make sugar out of imported sugar cane when they could grow sugar beets locally ( the way they do it in Belgium and France for example ) ?

Sugar Beets

Hi Jacques,

Actually, Canadians do refine sugar from beets. Or at least they used to...

A friend of mine is modelling a sugar beet loader for his S-Scale Free-Mo Module. He did some of his research on the Beet-Loader at the Redpath Sugar Museum.

It always comes down to the almighty dollar.

If it is cheaper to import raw cane than it is to grow beets locally, then that's what they use.

The The S Scale Workshop is featured in an article by Jim Martin, with photos by Pete Moffett in the May 2008 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman.

Another explaination would be that England had so many colonies producing sugar cane that it could have easily twisted Canada's arm to import cane or cane sugar instead of growing sugar beets.
Or, slave manpower being so cheap it was just financially logical to import cane sugar from Jamaica or Barbados.

Interesting topic, but I don't want to hijack my own thread :)
