Not sure what i am doing this weekend, i don't think I'll be rail fanning, but hey, who knows:toug: . i have TONS of un-built freight cars that have been sitting here for some time, perhaps...i did say, perhaps, i might start on them, we'll see if i can get motivated:eek:ops: .
...And with that said, heres what happened:
Dad and i ended up going to the LHS in Janesville today, low and behold, there was BOTH WSOR's E9's sitting in the yard:eeki: , i tell you what, they take FANTASTIC CARE of there engines, those E9's looked like they were just a year old, as i was right up on them checking them out, :bravo: Bill Garner(owner of WSOR) , :bravo: . (pics below:mrgreen: )

On WSOR's 25th anniversary dad and i was lucky enough to take a tour of the inside of these engines, VERY COOL:thumb::mrgreen: .

Now you folks well know i AM all about UP:twisted: , but for a "current" regional/shortline, WSOR is quite AWESOME:thumb: .
Sure WSOR is a local road to me, and real far from most of you, but i ask you, how could you not like WSOR?, this road really has some of the neatest engines operating, and they take great pride in keeping there engines looking good, you really have to appreciate that:thumb: . come on, you can say it, I AM A WSOR FAN:mrgreen: ...see, you feel much better after saying it don't you:thumb::mrgreen: .

SO anyways, we get to the LHS, and dad got an old bus, just exactly what he wanted too, a Greyhound with Chicago as its destination:thumb: . i, on the other hand, bought a CNW covered hopper:119: , great, another kit that i have to put together and weather...along with the stack of about 20 other freight car kits i have here:eek:ops: ...when will i learn:119: . i really DO like building the freight car kits & weathering them, i have just been in a modeling "slump" lately, i need to get motivated some how.

You're right, Dean, it's good to see those E-units in such great shape - kudos to the management for showing such pride in their railroad. :thumb::thumb: (Those two units are the equivalent of 2/3 of the total of Canadian-owned E-units.)

Don't feel too bad about having 20 kits to build - better than having none. ;) I've got 46 of them sitting on a shelf, with 37 more due to arrive at the LHS soon, plus 11 major loco rebuilds to do. (Just thought you'd like to know that there's always someone worse off than you.) :rolleyes::p:-D:-D:-D

Hi Deano---thanks for posting those beautiful E-9's---I have to admit I've become a WSOR and UP fan because of you---are the E units used in regular or excursion service ???
You've got me thinking about getting a set of those E9's and having them painted in the WSOR colours and using them on my layout under the "Special Guest" category---now if I only knew someone who could paint them :rolleyes: ---thanks again, Nutbar

Nutbar - I guess you could post a "Help Wanted" thread on the Gauge....I know being up in the "wilds" of Canada it's hard to find good help....:mrgreen:

Wait, the WSOR has E9's? When did THAT happen? Regardless, they look awesome! And if you don't need some of those kits...:p Just kidding:mrgreen:

Wayne, GLAD you liked the E9's:thumb: , and THANK YOU for telling me about your MANY unfinished projects, i don't feel so bad anymore:winki::mrgreen: .

Jim, THANKS for the complements on the pics:mrgreen: . i am so glad to have read your comment on my rail fan pics, thats EXACTLY what i have hoped would happen with you folks:thumb::mrgreen: .

nutbar, THANKS for your complements:mrgreen: , and to answer your question, yes, WSOR does lone those engines out on excursion service, interesting note, those engines and the cars that go with them were loaned out to Bill Gates before, pretty neat huh:thumb: . considering adding those E9's to your roster eh?...looks like Wayne is going to thank me for that:rolleyes::119: .

Gus, you ain't kidding, those E9's are in STUPENDOUS shape:thumb: .

CNWman, real glad to see you have a WSOR car on your layout:mrgreen: , i couldn't be prouder:thumb: .

STEVE!!!:mrgreen::mrgreen: , THANK YOU for the very kind words on my CNW Dash-9:mrgreen: .
glad you liked the E9's too:thumb: , and THANKS for the complements on dads layout, that bus fits it perfectly:thumb: .

*******************************************************
Tips & MY thoughts on a few things going on here lately...:winki:

WEATHERING...
REAL GLAD to see some people have started weathering lately:thumb: , once you get past the first one, each one after becomes easier and better:winki: .
A few things to consider, and perhaps be of help:

1- ALWAYS wash your project off with soapy water or alcohol FIRST, this takes off the greasy film usually left on the car/engine that releases it from the mold. doing this will make your weathering look better, and lets your ink/alcohol or paint flow better on the project:winki: .

2- Use pics of prototypes to help guide you as to where rust and dirt REALLY show up.

3- Weather according to the era your layout is modeled in, THIS IS IMPORTANT. if you are modeling current times, yes, you would see a FEW rust buckets out there, but remember every car IS NOT a rust bucket, so be sure and lightly weather a good amount of your cars, don't overdo them all:winki: . if you are modeling, well, lets say the 30's, like my good friend Wayne, check out his cars, they are weathered perfectly for the "era" of his layout:thumb: . in the 30's, most of the cars were fairly new from the change over between wood cars to steel cars, you wouldn't find the rust buckets we see today, sure SOME of the cars could get quite dirty, but NOT rust buckets. AGAIN, weather according to the era your layout is based on:winki: . (notice how clean the Fallen flag GT box is, not much rust, i took this shot last week. pic below)

4- When doing the ink wash or rust streaks, NEVER, NEVER, EVER, wipe the wash/paint off the car sideways:cry: , ALWAYS wipe in downward strokes. when the rain runs down the side of a car/engine, it runs from top to bottom, NOT side to side, remember that:winki: . the ONLY time i can think of to weather sideways, is to put rust from forklift scratches and the like on.

There is much more advice on weathering to be given, but i just wanted to touch on the most important things i felt that could really help:winki: .

POST YOUR FAVORITE ROADS THREAD...
I don't know if all of you folks have participated in that thread, so if you haven't, PLEASE DO:mrgreen: . the more people that post in it, the more interesting things we are finding out about our RR likes in this forum:thumb: . you can check that thread out and post your favorite roads by clicking HERE .

RAIL FANNING...
Obviously i enjoy rail fanning:mrgreen: , and sure sometimes i get lucky, but the fact is, there are MANY GREAT RR things, weather its engines, freight cars, or whatever waiting out there for YOU FOLKS to discover:thumb: . the problem is, the neat stuff doesn't come to your front door and say "SURPRISE! HERE I AM, TAKE MY PICTURE!":toug::119: , I WISH IT WAS THAT SIMPLE:mrgreen: . you folks could experience all the neat stuff i do buy picking your spots, and going out and spending a little time there:winki: . will you find neat stuff every time you go out?...NO:eeki: , i never mention all the times i come back empty handed:eek:ops: , but more often then not there WILL BE something neat out there:thumb: . it could be an engine, or a fallen flag freight car, or perhaps just an engine from your favorite road that you like, just don't get discouraged if you come back empty handed at times, like i said, more often then not, you WILL find something neat, but you have to BE THERE, to see it:twisted: .

**Kinda on the same subject...i have another "load" of fallen flag freight pics I'll be adding to the "Post current fallen flag freight thread" tomorrow, if anyone is interested, you can check that thread out HERE .

Till next time...Stay on track!:winki:

Hey, Dean, here's an old photo of an old friend, on a steam excursion trip in the '60s. The helper is an Atlas SD35W. ;):-D

Sorry, but that seems to be about the only one. I had two of them, along with a pair of SD24Ws and an M630W. The SDs were from Atlas, while the Montreal was a Tyco. All of the wide cabs were scratchbuilt from sheet styrene. Here are a couple of other "early" EG&E locos -
A regular SD24(Atlas):

A GP7(Athearn):

An SD35(Atlas):

And some F7s(Globe):
