Had to mention this since I know there's more than a few from Canada that read/post here...

Yesterday, I flew into Smithers, BC and wow what a beautiful place. The mountains were great to see (still snow capped) and the rivers looked cold and filled with steelhead. I heard the whistle from a CP train rumbling through town and thought how lucky those guys are to be running the rails along side those rugged and scenic mountains. Now I understand how the guys that post pictures on some of the rail/train pic websites get such great shots - with scenery like that as a background, any train picture improves.

I wish I could see it - some of the last great regions of unspoiled beauty on this continent.

I agree 100 % Herc Driver.
Several years ago I was lucky enough to do a 5 days backpacking trip in the Jasper National Park. The scenery is breathtaking.
We visited Rogers Pass too . It's where the Canadian Pacific Railway ( and the TransCanada highway ) crosses the Selkirk range. An impressive and scary place well known for the numerous avalanches.

My Grandma lived in Smithers until she died. Interesting that you saw a CP train through Smithers, the line is owned by CN, but I think there are a couple CP grain trains that go to the port at Prince Rupert.

I agree, it is a very beautiful area. How far out of Smithers are you planning on going?
