Cat jumps

My $200 Proto 2k ltd SW900 with all dcc stuff just took a journey 5ft straight down to the concrete floor thanks to Dusty the cat, needless to say the engine no longer functions as many of the plastics parts in the wheel assembly and gears are now toast,.Probably inevitable as this engine has been jinxed from day 1wall1

My cat is not allowed in the layout room. Period. He is not a jumper, but he loves playing with wires and leaving fur behind :)

that really does suck though,is there anyway to fix it?--josh
I suppose it could be fixed if i buy new wheel housings and figure out how all the little gears go back together ,but the thing has just never run right for me so i think its relegated to a static spot in the yard.
Dusty on the other hand is going to have to be real nice if he ever wants to get fed again:wink:

Cats in the layout room are bad juju.

Losing an engine sucks, but paying a vet $300 to extract LPBs from a kitty tummy and facing down the wife about it would scare me more.

Nah, but a wife in Vet school who worked at an emergency clinic for a few years. Actually dogs are worse overall for eating things, everything from Kotex to knitting needles.

I trained my cat not to jump on the layout. I set a dozen mouse traps, placed them on the layout (long before scenery was in place), then covered them all with newspaper. When kitty jumped on the layout, the traps went SNAP!, and the paper protected kitty's feet from getting snapped.

Of course, pulling kitty off the ceiling was a bit of a chore, but well worth the effort - she never jumped on the layout again! ;)

Mine are model railroad cats. They love coming up and watching the trains...especially the sound on my geese. They behave themselves and don't knock things over.

The best way to prevent cats from jumping on the layout...

Ralph: I added a door like that (actually an accordion type) at the top of my basement. It took the cat most of 2 weeks to figure out how to open it. I drilled a hole to put a piece of wire through and it took him about the same time to figure out how to remove it. I now have a hook and eye latch and he hasn't figured it out in a couple of years.

They really are clever little critters aren't they? :) Our 15 year old isn't spry enough to leap up to the layout but our newly adopted energetic one year old cat would wreak havoc were she able to get on the other side of that door!

IF I ever had a cat, he'd be spending his time trying to figure out how to unlock the deadbolt to get in the front door! sign1
