i generally use 44lbs stock with most everything i do. its stiff enough to be sturdy and thin enough to work with. sorry for the fragmented posts. but the thoughts just wont come all at once.

Thanks I'll give some lighter weight paper a try. Your models are my inspiration for my vision of my fleet and I hope at some point I can have them looking as good as the ones you've produced.

As for scoring; For my folds I was holding the piece up to the light so I could see the fold line, placing a staight edge along it and folding while still in my hands, that is, I wasn't placing it on a surface then folding. Not sure this is a good way of doing things, but I was worried that once I got it on a table that my straight edge would move and I wouldn't be lined up correctly.

How do you guys ensure that your straight edge is aligned properly with out holding up to the light?

Thanks for all the help.

Well, I trace (scratch) my scoring lines at the printed side, not the opposite one. I can live with some small cracks on the paint, as I can always paint them after assembly, with a color pencil or something ;)

In my opinion that's the easier, and less time consuming way, you can also scratch your scoring lines at the opposite blank part, but it is harder to do and more time consuming.

Once the fold lines are scratched (scored), only a light pressure will fold the part exactly at the fold line.

For a reverse fold I make a pinprick at the end of each line, turn the sheet over, line up my straightedge with the pinpricks and then score. Works well for me.

I've built our Defender, Liner(one of the large versions), Colonial Shuttle and half a Heavy Raider. My tip would be to simply take your time, glueing tab by tab in places to ensure a good fit AND to avoid some messy situations. I helped with the unfold and instructions of the Liner models and I STILL got mine wrong because I steamed along. LOL I had to improvise my way out of the mess I'd made for myself.

I'd say our models are more tricky than Jays, because of things like inner formers, details we tried to maintain and because we wanted to keep curved surfaces as rounded as possible. Though there are some that are easier than others.

Jays are excellent too and would suit the beginner a bit better then our fleet.

I'd recommend building a few of Jays first, then move on to ours. We've avoided doing ships that are covered by Jay so far except for the Galactica so it's be an ideal way to start.

Like shiftdel, I score from the printed side. I have two favourite scoring tools. Picture attached.
The first is a small knitting or darning needle that I found at the thrift shop. They come in a variety of sizes. The three shown are about 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm. I like the 2mm, but the smaller one is handy sometimes. All are about 6 inches long.
The other (my favourite) is a little hobby tool I found in the scrapbooking section at the local dollar store. Its the one with wooden handle. One end is a rounded point, the other has a small (about 1mm) ball at the end.
Because the ends on all the above are rounded they don't mark the paper too much, and where it's really prominent I touch up later with watercolors.

Keep in mind that less pressure is better - you're not trying to cut the paper, or make a deep mark, just to coax it into folding where you want it to. Practice, practice.

As for glue, everyone has their favourite, but I've observed that most cardmodelers agree that good old white glue is best. I always use Aleene's Easy Flow Tacky Glue. I apply it with a toothpick, and about 10 seconds of pressure is enough to tack something into place. 30 seconds and it will handle some fairly rough treatment.

Keep at it,

SJ

I'd also downloaded the MQO file and starting working on it, already did the texture work on it.... which was very easy, as Jaybats did all work on the model, the texture almost applies itself over the model :D

You guys are really helpfull. Thanks alot. I started experimenting today with some of the feedback you all have given me.

I printed up Jays Galactica but this time instead of using the 110lb I printed it up on 24lb paper and then rough cut around the piece and using spray adhesive, glued it to another piece of 24lb paper, let sit under some books for a while and cut out the piece. This is easier to work with I think but I've only just begun. One thing I have noticed with this, is that the ink seems to better adhere to the piece during folding.

The Galactica is a bit bigger than the Valkyrie and I believe that will be some help to me as well.

I tried using some glue I had in the garage, Tight bond II, and it seems to be working well. Using small amounts on a tooth pick and holding like squirrel said for about 10 to 20 seconds seems to be working well.

I have yet to bend any complicated pieces but I scored on the printed side using the back of my exacto knife and lightly scraping. Folds are much crisper and cleaner.

Thanks again for all the help. You guys rock!

On a seperate issue I'm sure many of you have seen the 3D representaions of BSG ships on the X3 mod BSG Public - The X Universe Forums
Really great stuff there. I watched "The Hand of God" last night where Apollo bombs the Tillium mining base on the asteroid, great fracken episode! Well this 3D model of the base is excellent and would make a cool model especially if placed on a lunar/asteroid type surafce.

Late reply

LOL. "Technically", I'm not the moderator for this subforum... TheWebdude is...

<snip>

Sj: Looks damn good mate! And btw, you bear more than a passing resemblance to a guy I met when I worked at Grand Canyon National Park. (Minus the green hair) Your name wouldn't happen to be Ben, would it?

Ekuth, sorry about the late reply - I was actually scanning back through the thread to remind myself what the H-E-double-toothpicks I promised everyone I'd do, and ran across several posts from way back that I'd missed.

Anyway, nope, it wasn't me. My first name is Steve, and I've never been down the Grand Canyon way. And thanks for straightenin me out on the moderator issue. I'da swore you were one of them at one point, but I must of been confusing my forums.

Working on Viper mark2

Hello all sorry for being away so long wonderfull to see this thread has grown. Began work on an updated viper 2. In case I don't finish it before I deploy here are some pics to go by, and the files so far. I need to work on the seat some more it's angle is wrong. Will worry about that when I finish skinning the model. So far all the major structure looks fine, the only major parts left are the aft wheel wells and lower cooler ribs. I am working at 160% scale of the files attached for a length just shy of 15 inches

Hey! Long time no see.

Good to see you buddy, your Viper is looking very cool! You may have seen further back in this thread that we've mentioned a Viper with interior a few times now. Nice to see one take shape.

Don't be a stranger now. :)

Update on Viper

Worked on skinning the viper today. I have the Nacels, cooler intake, and guns left to finish. Here are a few pics of the progress.
