1:2,160... or translated means an N scale layout on a 1:12 model. Since I have not acquired the space to build this layout YET, I decided to build a model of it instead. It's not the greatest but it gave me a better 3D idea of what I was getting myself into. The layout is designed to fit into a 13'4 by 9'8 corner.

I have been wondering why there haven't been any updates to your layout thread. Now I know why, you've been building a model of a model. It is very nice.

Thanks guys. I'm not done with it yet but I have not decided how far I'm going to take it. I want to show some bridges, structures and some other scenery still but I don't want to get too crazy.
OK, where's the trains?
I was thinking of having Kooklik in the card modelers forum fold me up a small Amtrak train! Have you seen the Big Boy he's working on?

And what scale letter shall we assign to that???

NNN ?
ZZZ ?
NZN ?
WoW ?
LOL ?
ROTFL ?
I don't know.... how about N2tiny?

I've seen mention of doing mock ups like this in magazines but I think yours is the first I've seen. That's really well done. What a great way to see how the layout will look! Cool miniature backdrop, by the way!

The other one was just practice for this one! My very tolerant other half has told me that I can maintain both but in the interest of budgetary concerns, it will probably be cannibalized. There for a while, I was trying to figure out how to put a bridge between the two. That's when I discovered the limit of her tolerance.:p

I know Malcom Furlow did a mock-up for the San Juan central. It's a good idea, and I am surprised at myself for not thinking of doing one for my current layout. It would have helped out!

Very cool, well done TrainNut.
Your 1/12 of your future N scale layout is ... bigger than my real N scale switching layout ( 11" by 23" ).
By the way, shouldn't it be a 1/1920 scale ? ( 160X 12 = 1920 ).

Hummm- I think I might need some planning help.
What's up Woodone? PM me... or call.

Well sort of... in one direction anyways as the model is 13.4"x9.8"!:p And now, I'm going to have to go and see if I can find pictures of said layout as I don't recall what it looks like.

Yep. Good catch.:p I was doing some other calculations near that same time using 180 a lot and apparently it got stuck in the brain.wall1

Thats just crazy, are you going to finish it?
I thought it'd be fun but I don't know how far I'll take it at this point. Where it is at now satisfied my curiosity. If I do any more to it, I'd like to place a few structures, some bridges and maybe a little bit of scenery.

Nope. I just did a quick internet search for some panoramic images I could scale and crop down to 1 inch tall real quick and those are what I found. By the way, I looked back at your past posts and found mention of your switching layout but never found a dedicated thread for it. Does such a thread exist?

Thanks for the info about the backdrop TrainNut.
There is no specific thread for my switching layout. I'm starting one just now:)

I'm fascinated with micro layouts. Those guys make great stuff just within a shoebox.

That is cool. Nice job.
I have seen others in mags and at shows. Does give you a great idea on how your layout will turn out.
I've always been amazed at the detail some put into them. One featured in Model Railroader actually had G scale people standing next to it.
But............One thing that always runs through my mind when I see these micro-layouts.........
I always thought that wouldn't the time and expense(the one in Model Railroader, and others I've seen ) be better spent on the real layout?
Though on layout tour featured in Model Railroader, the guy made an HO scale model of his HO scale layout, then put it in a barn's loft , with the roof cut out so you can see it.
Now that was cool!

As I mentioned somewhere above, I have not acquired the space to build this yet so I thought I'd build a model of it for the time being to see if there were any design flaws that needed to be worked out before I started on the real thing.:p As far as cost... I didn't spend a penny on it as I had everything I needed already lying around. Speaking of pennies, did anybody notice the penny in the pictures for scale reference?
